IS claims Bangladesh mosque attack

Dhaka, Nov 27 (IANS) The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for an attack at a Shia mosque in Bangladesh that killed one person and injured three others, a monitoring group said on Friday.

Police said three men carried out the attack on the Al-Mostefa Shia mosque in Shibganj, some 125 km north of Dhaka during the evening prayers on Thursday, bdnews24 reported.

The US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi activity, posted on its website that the IS claimed responsibility in a message on Twitter.

Bangladesh authorities still maintain that IS is not active in the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina described the attackers as “insane” and “not true Muslims”.

The IS, in its English language magazine ‘Dabiq’, has threatened more attacks in Bangladesh, saying its followers had united behind “a new leader”.

According to police, attacks on the Shia minority are rare in Sunni-dominated Bangladesh. Last month, a grenade attack on Shias in Old Dhaka killed two people and injured over 100 others.
