Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat charged by police

Dhaka, Dec 30 (IANS) Cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife have been charged by Bangladesh police for allegedly torturing their 11-year-old domestic girl servant.

If they are found guilty they are likely to face jail terms of between seven and 14 years, plus a fine, BBC reported on Wednesday.

The couple are presently out on bail.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already suspended the fast bowler and the chargesheet filed by the police, which was given to the court here, says that the couple used to physically torture the girl.

The case is to be heard on January 12.

The child was found in the streets of Dhaka in September with a black eye and a broken leg. Hossain had gone to the police on September 6 saying that his maid had gone missing. After the girl’s statement, Hossain handed himself over to the police on October 5.
