50 dead at gay club in America’s worst mass shooting

Orlando (AFP): Fifty people died and another 53 were injured early today when a heavily-armed gunman opened fire and seized hostages at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, police said in the worst mass shooting in US history.

Terrified survivors — who moments before were laughing and dancing with friends — described how the gunman named by media as a US citizen of Afghan descent raked the club with bullets, prompting a police SWAT team to storm the venue.

“We have cleared the building, and it is with great sadness that I share we have not 20, but 50 casualties in addition to the shooter,” Mayor Buddy Dyer told a mid-morning news briefing in Orlando, more than doubling the previously given death toll.

“There are another 53 that are hospitalised.”

President Barack Obama was being kept up to date by his homeland security and counterterrorism aide on what Florida officials are investigating as a terrorist attack.
FBI official Ronald Hopper told reporters officials were “confident” there was no immediate further threat to the area, or to the US.

Because of the scale of the crime, however, Orlando’s mayor declared a city-wide state of emergency and has asked the Florida governor to take the same measure state-wide. The federal government has offered its full support with the probe.

Police have yet to officially identify the gunman but US TV networks quoting law enforcement sources named him as Omar Mateen, who was born to Afghan parents in 1986 and lives in Port St Lucie, Florida, about two hours drive from Orlando.

It was reported that Mateen — who died in a shootout with police after the siege — has no apparent criminal history.

Hopper said authorities were looking into whether the suspect had “leanings” toward Islamic extremism, but Florida officials also invited a local Islamic leader to address the media in a bid to preempt a possible backlash against the Muslim community.

The chaotic events unfolded over a three hour period, beginning at around 2 am (0600 GMT) when shots rang out amid the throbbing music at the Pulse Orlando nightclub near closing time.

Police said the shots were fired by a gunman armed with an assault rifle and a handgun.

A police officer working “extra duties” at the club responded, joined by two other officers, who engaged the suspect in a gun battle, Orlando police chief John Mina said.

“The suspect at some point went back inside the club where more shots were fired. This did turn into a hostage situation,” he told reporters.

“At approximately 0500 hours (0900 GMT) this morning, the decision was made to rescue hostages that were in there.”

Police then stormed the venue, using explosives and breaking through a wall with a wheeled armoured vehicle known as a BearCat. Mina said about 30 people were rescued during the operation.

‘Nothing To Do With Religion’, Says Orlando Gunman’s Father

Orlando (AFP): The father of the suspected gunman in today’s Orlando mass shooting said he believed his son was motivated by hatred of gays — not by his Muslim religion.

“This had nothing to do with religion,” Mir Seddique told NBC News. He said his son, Omar Mateen, recently lashed out in his presence after witnessing a gay couple embracing in downtown Miami, and suggested the incident may have triggered the atrocity.

“He saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry,” Seddique told the network.

50 Killed, 53 Injured In Florida Nightclub Shooting, Says Orlando Mayor

Orlando (Agencies): A gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun took hostages and opened fire inside a crowded Florida nightclub, killing 50 people and wounding 53 others before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers, Orlando authorities said on Monday.

Police Chief John Mina also said the shooter had some sort of “suspicious device.” He said the suspect exchanged gunfire with an officer working at the club around 2 a.m., then went back inside and took hostages.

Around 5 a.m., authorities sent in a SWAT team to rescue the hostages, and the suspect then died in a gunfight with those officers. Mina said police have not determined an exact number of casualties, but that “approximately 20” people were dead inside the club.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent in Charge Danny Banks said during a news conference that the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism. He says authorities are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.

“This is an incident, as I see it, that we certainly classify as domestic terror incident,” said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.

Police had said previously on Twitter that there was a “controlled explosion” at the scene of the shooting at Pulse Orlando. Mina said that noise was caused by a device intended to distract the shooter.

Mina Justice was outside the club early Sunday trying to contact her 30-year-old son Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: “He’s coming.”

“The next text said: ‘He has us, and he’s in here with us,'” she said. “That was the last conversation.”

Dozens of police vehicles, including a SWAT team, swarmed the area around the club. At least two police pickup trucks were seen taking what appeared to be shooting victims to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.
Pulse Orlando posted on its own Facebook page around 2 a.m.: “Everyone get out
of pulse and keep running.” Just before 6 a.m., the club posted an update: “As soon as we have any information we will update everyone. Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event. Thank you for your thoughts and love.”

Police said local, state and federal agencies were investigating.
The incident follows the fatal shooting late Friday of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who was killed after her concert in Orlando by a 27-year-old Florida man who later killed himself. Grimmie was a YouTube sensation and former contestant on “The Voice.”

Jon Alamo said he was at the back of one of the club’s rooms when a man holding a weapon came into the front of the room.

“I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,” Alamo said. “The music stopped.”

Club-goer Rob Rick said it happened around, 2 a.m., just before closing time.

“Everybody was drinking their last sip,” he said.

He estimated more than 100 people were still inside when he heard shots, got on the ground and crawled toward a DJ booth. A bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and an area in the back where only workers are allowed. People inside were able to then escape through the back of the club.

Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge when he started hearing gunshots. He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged, where police were telling people to back away from the club. He saw injured people being tended to across the street.

“I was thinking, are you kidding me? So I just dropped down. I just said please, please, please, I want to make it out,” he said. “And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don’t get shot.”

  1. A very tragic incident, indeed! And with the Euro cup on, and with the French police saying stuff openly, things are probably going to take a turn for the worse with all those brainwashed maniacs on the loose. I hope and pray that I’m dead wrong on this though! RIP to the victims.

  2. Delusional Praveena Pinto brings up Euro cup in response to this terrorist attack in Florida!!! How does Beef Club produce so many geniuses?

    • “How does Beef Club produce so many geniuses”? – Wonders ThyampaNNA

Hmmm.. well, we gotta ask Nendrakai Podiji. We gotta ask Subbi Swami and Venku Naidu. We gotta ask them why the BEEF CLUB made some nautanki as HRD minister. AND then, you can pose me some stupid Q (regarding BeeFu).

But shhhhh.. this is a headline where some precious Americans have been killed. So, I’ll forgive you for the ‘Beef’ rumor. 😉

  3. Over the centuries we have had breaking news all the time, and after a while people get on with their lives till the next attack.

All Americans know of Islam after 9/11 is that it is “The Religion of Peace”. These attacks will never stop and will go on till a day something very, drastic and catastrophic would take place that will force people into rewriting the ideology of hate into a fountain of love and peace. There has never ever been an apology, nor the world will ever get one, because it is always someone else’s fault.

Barak Hussain Obama said that this was an act of terror similar to what took place in a school, house of worship, theatre and now a night club and we should have a tighter gun control. Yet again he would not call a spade a spade. Where is our learned Shaikh I have not heard his logic in a very long time, is he on some kind of sabbatical?

  4. By name, Omar Mateen, my gut feelings is this man’s parents or ancestors may have hailed from Pakistan, one of the two countries that are a haven and production factories tfor terrorists.
This man was a fanatic, with a regimented mind.

I am very saddened that over 50 people have been massacred by this lunatic and sick man. May their souls rest in peace.

  5. “.. may have hailed from Pakistan” – Mr. Nelson

No sir. His parents are Afghani. Our Yumreeki copy-paste super-sleuth cum Nendrakai Podi lover has been ‘kind’ enough to post his mug for us. Oh yeah, ALL thanks to Reuters/other News. 🙂

  6. Mr. Praveen Pinto,

Sorry for assuming that Omar Mateem’s ancestors were from Pakistan. Pakistan can be compared to a naughty, shit-stirring student in a class and whoever is involved is mischief, nevertheless the needle-of-suspicion is on her. How sad? Where is Mohd. Rizwan Shaikh? He could have clarified the matter much better. I am very sorry for this bhool. My thousand, humble apologies to you.

    Good night and sweet dreams,
    Nelson Lewis

  7. I do not understand why Americans are very interested in giving citizenships to fanatical elements with regimental minds like Afghanis, Pakistanis, Somalis and do not have a foolproof system of interviewing, profiling and doing background checks of people before they are allowed to enter their soil.

Belgium will very soon go to dogs. In the United Kingdom, on section of minorities is creating mayhem and trying to impose their puritanical and bizarre rules, purportedly said to be based on their holy book, which may not be true. It is like me going as a guest in someone’s house and trying to dictate terms to my hosts.

  8. “Nothing to do with religion” says father of this ‘gunman’!!

Great – thanks for your ‘taqqiyya’ talk even after we have 50 dead people!!! What a disgrace these people are!!

  9. Rana Ayyub, a regressive reporter posted following right after Orlando shootings. She probably didn’t know the identity of shooter when she did so!! LOL LOL

“What terrorism would we call this, #America ?”

Her qualifications include working for Tehleka run by Taruna Tejapaala who is facing sexual assault charges. She is also notoriously known for her hatred towards Hindus, BJP, RSS and Modiji. So, one has to wonder why all these regressive groups along with Beef Club hate India, RSS and USA? Are these guys silently endorsing a medieval ideology that is creating a havoc in modern world?

  10. I must add – Indian secular media and clueless stenographers are really funny. Many including Bakra Dutta are busy blaming guns for Orlando tragedy. Agreed – Guns are an issue here in USA. But, it was only part of equation. What about the ideology that influenced his actions? What about his background and the ideology that shaped his personality? What about the same ideology causing so much destruction all over the world? Not even a single word on tribal ideology from these clueless stenographers!!! Unbelievable!!!

  11. The father should be ashamed of himself, his son created the single largest carnage after 9/11 because he saw two men kiss, but all over his native Afghanistan the entertainment for the rich and powerful is called “Bacha-Bazi” translated means to “Child play”.

In traditional Afghan weddings it is hard to find females to perform, so young boys (who have not gained puberty and/or with minimal or no body hair) dance at weddings, and the highest bidder among the guests rapes the boy. If he was against homosexuality, then Afghanistan has one of the highest homo and bisexual people in the world. As females are hard to get, men turn their lust to other men, and he had the money then very young boys are his prey. Bacha Bazi is so widespread and practised in Afghanistan and the frontier province of Pakistan, and there is no one who does not know what is happening.

Here is a BBC documentary on Bacha-Bazi and a link to 122 videos on BB

  12. Ironically joker Praveena Pinto and other Beef Club members seem to be very upset with this cockroach who was carrying years old ideological virus!!!! When the followers of same ideology call for destroying sanaathana bhaaratha as we witnessed in JNU campus, these hilarious beef club members do a U-turn and support those anti-indian elements without any shame!!!!

As I have said before, Modiji came to power because of blatant hypocrisy by secular groups and arrogance of minority groups in India!! Similar forces are at play here in US and Donald Trump is on is way to become next President. I have no idea when the stenographers in media will eventually see the reality and start doing their job as ‘journalists’?

  13. “Katies Hopkins does indeed have a points” writes joker Pinto.

This is the same illiterate who refuses to acknowledge the common theme in all those MIA incidents. This is the same genius who would support ‘pakistan zindaabad’ groups from JNU incident!! For months and moths, he was acting dumb in response to my comments on cartoon controversy. All of a sudden he agrees with Katie Hopkin, a british version of Ann Coulter!!! His bipolar disorder that makes him apply one standard to sanaathana groups and a different standard to his foreign masters is an emblematic of a much larger problem associated with ‘Beef Club’ and many other pseudo-secular groups. What a bunch of jokers!!

  14. “lah dee dah… blah blah blah….. sajjige bajeel…..puligoddhel…. daali-tove…His bipolar disorder that makes him apply one standard to Sanaaaathaaanaaaa groups and a different standard to his foreign masters……… and some reference to Beefu.. blah blah” – Original Joker RampaNNA

Lol! Poor ThyampaNNA forgets that he is bringing up my allegedly “bipolar disorder” under “50 dead at Gay club in America’s worst mass shooting”.

And to add perennial insult to his fatal injury, he throws in his “Sanaaaathaaanaaa groups”.

And if that wasn’t enough, he had to smash more Beef Pie on his mug by bringing in “Beef” too!

However, the reference to Beef is quite understandable since he is the lifetime Prez of the Beef Club which is quite renowned for producing ONLY geniuses!

Example – the pravaadi who promised every Indian kevala 15 lakhs only, our beloved HRD minister who boasted of a Yale ‘degree’ after attending some 5 day junket, Scooter gadkari, ‘Thai’ Swaraja, Subbi Swami who says the RBI Gov is not Indian at heart, mundu-wearing Vanku Naidu, plenty of unknown sadhvis/sadhus who say that every ONE Indian woman should bear some 5 or 10 (enchina ya, akulu daane assembly line or factory’ya?), ….. and the list is endless.

Now, since the middle of the year is almost coming to an end in under a fortnight, let us take stock of the accolades that our Yumreeki ThyampaNNA has piled on me:

    1. My Yumreeki Visa was rejected. (Poor chap…. must have cooked it up post some Diwali laddos – laced with ‘Bhang’.
    2. I’m a Joker. (I guess it takes one to recognize one)
    3. I worked in a Goat farm in Saudi. (Chap must have been on “Heavy Fuel”)
    4. In Saudi, I was herded with some 10-15 goatherds in a 10 foot by 10 foot shack on bunk-beds. (After effects of Heavy Fuel).
    5. In Mangalore, I run a beedi business which happens to belong to my family. (If so, I wonder what was the need for point nos. 3 and 4 above).
    6. I’m an illiterate. In some very special cases, I’m also called a “genius”. (And lo! I’m ‘diagnosed’ with “Bipolar Disorder”).
    7. My net speed is v v low. (Has anybody heard of a better joke than this? Lol)
    8. I don’t have a clue about Murudeshwara statues. (And if I were to know about it, would I have been given a Padma bhushan like our Joker, ‘Anupamaaa Kheer’?
    9. I “hate” the Sanaaaaathaaaana groups. (Ditto comment as under point no. 3 above)
    10. I have Bipolar disorder. (Oh yeah, and Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, a touch of Dementia, a Kangaroo tail with a pouch, two horns and buck-teeth too! But shhhhhh…… don’t remind me of it again as I’m sure to forget it before you can say ‘rampa’.)
    11. I have ‘phoreen’ masters. (Sure…. I’m Yumreeki citizen (like you) although my Yumreeki visa was allegedly rejected).
    12. I’m a Beef Eater. (Yeah man! I simply love it and for ONCE, you are RIGHT! 🙂 )

Yaar Rampu’ji….. more jokes….. 12 points in under 6 months. I fervently hope and pray that MORE accolades pile up. 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Gracias, RampaNNA.
