Bantwal: Thieves broke into a house belonging to Prabhakar Moolya in Nekkarekodi in Manchi village in the taluk on Monday afternoon.
Moolya’s wife Sumati, an anganwadi worker, had locked the house and gone to work. When she returned the theft came to light.
The rear door of the house was found broken open. The lock of a cupboard in a room was cracked open and two gold chain, a necklace and two sets of earrings have been taken away, besides Rs 2,500 in cash.
The Bantwal rural police were informed. They arrived with the canine and fingerprint squads. The sniffer dog led them to a hill behind the house, where the empty box in which the jewellery had been kept was found thrown. It has been seized for investigation.
The theft in broad daylight has worried the residents around. It is suspected that persons who were aware of the movements and daily schedule of the owners had a hand in it.
