8-9 more militants involved in Dhaka cafe attack: Police

Dhaka, Aug 1 (IANS) Bangladesh police has information about eight to nine more militants who were involved in the terror attack at a cafe in upscale Gulshan area here that left 22 people, mostly foreign nationals, dead.

The police claims that the militants were directly or indirectly involved in the attack at the Holey Artisan Bakery here when at least seven militants stormed the cafe on the night of July 1 and took more than 40 persons hostages.

“We are collecting evidence about them,” bdnews24 quoted counter-terrorism police chief Monirul Islam as saying on Sunday.

However, the official did not mention their links with the seven attackers — one of whom was reported to be the chief chef of the cafe. Six of them were killed by Bangladeshi army on July 2 morning in “Operation Thunderbolt” while a seventh person was captured alive.

The police earlier arrested four persons for sheltering the attackers.

Two of the freed hostages were also questioned for their alleged involvement in the attack. Police have reportedly freed them but their families claim they have not returned home.

Raihan Kabir, one of the suspected militants killed in a raid on a house on July 26, was the trainer of the attackers, police said.
