Minister Jayamala Inaugurates Indira canteens in Kundapur and Karkala

Kundapur/Karkala: The Udupi District minister in-charge Dr Jayamala inaugurated Indira canteens in Kundapur and Karkala Taluk on Wednesday, Novemebr 21.

Minister Jayamala, DC Priyanka Mary Francis and others tasted the food at the canteen on the first day. The menu consisted of Kesari Baath. The canteen evoked a good response on the first day.

Breakfast and meals will be available in the canteen on all the days of the week. Breakfast is priced at Rs 5. The afternoon and evening meals cost Rs 10 per plate and will comprise of rice, sambhar and curds.

Breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., lunch from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and dinner from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Jayamala said, “Former chief minister Siddaramaiah dreamt to make Karnataka a hunger-free state and started the Indira Canteen project across the state. Indira Canteen is one of the most successful projects in the state. Today his dream is going to be successful in the state. ‘No one should suffer from hunger’ is the main intention of Indira Canteen. People should get food at an affordable price in the Indira canteens”.

“The government is not only giving food at less price through Indira Canteens, it also contributes to creating Jobs in the state. The Canteen prefers to provide clean and fresh hot food for the people,” she said.

Minister Jayamala urged the people to make use of the facility and instructed officials to maintain the quality of food and cleanliness.

MLC Prapapchandra Shetty, DC Priyanka Mary Francis, Assistant commissioner Kundapur T Bhoobalan, TP EO Kiran and others were present.

These Indira Canteens are designed with a concept to cater to the extremely poor people and therefore only the poor should be allowed, and not the Private Bus Drivers who earn Rs/1000.- a day and the Rick drivers who make Rs.1000.- a day, and all the others who can very well afford to eat in Restaurants.

    A fool-proof system should be incorporated and implemented to restrict abuse of such a thoughtful scheme for benefit of the poor.
