It was the much heralded return of a music maestro to the capital city, Washington D.C. after a gap of eight years. Adnan Sami, a renowned and highly-acclaimed singer, musician, pianist, actor and composer (along with his band) was making his appearance at the beautiful and historic Warner Theater on April 12. The concert was presented by Manish Sood of Intense Entertainment in association with Fakhra Khalid of The Moment.
Being a cricket enthusiast, I reminisced of the time I listened to Adnan Sami??s popular song which cheered the Indian cricket team during the 2003 Cricket World Cup. It invoked nationalistic spirit and accentuated India??s love for cricket. Over the years, I have listened to Adnan Sami??s music which merges Asian and western music styles and instruments. His albums – “Kabhi To Nazar Milao” and “Tera Chehra” as well as his artistic music videos -“Bheegi Bheegi Raat”, “Tera Chehra”,”O Meri Jaan”, and “Kabhi Nahi” are my all-time favorites.
Adnan Sami??s fans packed the Warner Theater which has a seating capacity of 1,800. The graceful Nilima Mehra welcomed the invigorated audience and set the stage for an action packed night. Shreya Bhatia opened up the concert with her rendition of a Bollywood number followed by a scintillating dance performance by students of Studio Dhoom to a melody of Adnan Sami??s hit numbers. Finally, it was time for the maestro to make his appearance on stage. As the audience watched the video on the giant screen depicting (in a humorous vein) the amazing transformation of Adnan Sami from his previous weight of 230 kgs to his current frame of 85 kgs, the singer thundered on the stage to the rapturous applause of a doting crowd.
The singer opened up with “Tu Sirf Mera Mehboob Mein Teri Mehbooba” and “Chain Mujhe Ab Aaye Na” then went on to thank his teacher the famous Santoor Maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who had formally trained Adnan in Indian classical music. Adnan??s high-octane energy was unstoppable as he entertained the audience with a rendition of his all-time favorite songs interspersed with frequent bouts of jokes (in English and Punjabi) and comical acts which had the crowd in splits.
He assured the crowd that he would acquiesce to any of their song requests as he owes his fame and success to his fans. For the next three hours, he belted out songs that have made him a household name – “Salaame Ishq”, “Sun Zara,” Dil Keh Raha Hai Dil Se”, “Chain Mujhe Ab Aaye Na”, and many others. Adnan has been playing the piano since the age of 7. Today, his mastery of the piano was in full view as he played the keyboard at an amazing pace. As a classical concert pianist, Adnan Sami has given “solo” Royal Command Performances before the King of Sweden and King Hussein of Jordan. He has also performed for many Heads of State and Governments including President Mitterrand of France, President of the United Arab Emirates, President and Prime Minister of India, President and Prime Minister of Pakistan, and others. Adnan has won numerous awards and accolades.
Although during the concert he frequently poked fun at his previous weight, at times he did strike a sentimental note alluding to the fact that in 2006, he took a sabbatical and reportedly lost over 160 kgs to make a comeback in April 2007. He clearly wanted to set the record straight by reiterating to one and all that “he had lost weight by diet and exercise and not by liposuction or bariatric treatments as professed by some.” He also sang “Noor-e-Khuda”,”Ishq Hota Nahi”, “Aye Udi Udi” “Ishqan Ishqan”, and many others. The band accompanying Adnan Sami also charmed the audience as their performance was par excellence.
Finally, as the event was winding down, he asked the entire audience to get on their feet and dance as he sang his concluding number “Lift Kara De”.
As we all trudged out of the theater, despite the fact that it was past midnight, we were invigorated by the sheer genius of Adnan Sami??s talent. Kudos to Manish Sood and the entire Intense Entertainment team, Fakhra Khalid, as well as all the sponsors, media partners, and fans who pulled out all stops to make this event a grand success.
