Arab workers banned from Israeli schools

Tel Aviv, Oct 19 (IANS) Several Israeli cities have denied access to Arab maintenance workers to schools until the end of the school day, the media reported on Monday.

The measure, which will also be applied to Jews to avoid charges of racial discrimination, has been taken to ensure the safety of schools at a time of escalating violence in the area, Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot said in a report.

Cities such as capital Tel Aviv, Rishon Letzion, Hod Hasharon, Rehovot and Givatayim have suspended maintenance work during school hours, EFE reported.

“Because of the sensitive situation we have decided not to allow the entry of contractors and operators, whether Jews or Arabs, for work during school hours,” said the City Council of Tel Aviv.

The decision coincides with an escalation in violence since October 1, which has claimed the lives of eight Israelis, an Eritrean and 43 Palestinians.
