Atletico Mineiro keep pressure on leaders Corinthians

Rio de Janeiro, Oct 15 (IANS) Atletico Mineiro moved to within two points of leaders Corinthians with a 2-1 victory over Internacional in Brazil’s Serie A championship.

In Wednesday’s match, Lucas Pratto opened the scoring at the Independencia stadium in Belo Horizonte before Paulao equalized for the hosts just before halftime, reported Xinhua.

Marcos Rocha put the result beyond doubt in the 70th minute with a low finish from an acute angle.

The victory lifted Atletico to 59 points ahead of Corinthians’ home clash against Goias on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Figueirense dented Flamengo’s hopes of a top-four finish with a 3-0 victory over the Rio de Janeiro outfit in Florianopolis. Clayton scored twice for the hosts and Dudu added another a minute from time.

In other matches on Wednesday, Sport Recife beat Avai 3-0, Joinville defeated Coritiba 3-1 and Ponte Preta won 1-0 at Palmeiras.
