Bantwal: Death of Aquatic Creatures in Bulk in Dasarabettu Raises Alarm

Bantwal: Passersby and villagers were shocked to spot a mass of dead aquatic creatures, a large number of fish in particular, in the Kambalabettu Okkettur rivulet at Dasarabettu in the taluk.

The spot is located close to the regional station of the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) in Ramanagar in Vittal, on the way to Paleri past its main gate.

The bulk remains of the creatures was found deposited at the dam catchment. It is suspected that they had remained there for two days at least.

The water sample has been collected and sent for laboratory analysis to ascertain the cause of mass death. Informed sources said that Calcium Carbide used in welding metals and also seepage of Endosulfan might have caused the incident.

Vittal panchayat chief executive officer Leena Britto, police and other officials visited the spot and studied the damage. A case has been filed in the Vittal police station on behalf of the panchayat.
