Bantwal: Hemavati Acharya (47), a resident of Bhandaribettu in the taluk, died in a road mishap near Gurupur Kinnikambala on Sunday.
She was the wife of Purandara Acharya, a specialist in wood carving. She was in the pillion with her husband in a Honda Activa scooter. She was a popular music teacher and had been training many students in and around Bantwal.
She had also given bhajan and other vocal music programmes, esp., at the Ganeshotsava events in Jakribettu.
First reports said that the scooter had skidded as a result of which she fell on to the road and suffered critical injuries. Later information suggested the possibility of a hit-and-run case.
Eyewitnesses said that she was holding her helmet in her hand instead of wearing it on her head. They were returning home after attending the obsequies of a female relative who too had died in a scooter mishap in Nooyi a few days ago.
A hairclip or hairpin she had on is said to have pierced her cerebral part which resulted in heavy bleeding. She died while being taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru.
Acharya suffered moderate injuries. He is recovering in a hospital.
