Bantwal: Four wood-processing factories are operating by the side of Kotekani-Talamogaru stretch of the Mudipu-Melkar road in the taluk.
Villagers have complained to the deputy commissioner and the chief conservator of forests regarding the damage wrought by the frequent movement of heavy lorries carrying timber.
School-children are put to hazard by the lorries, they say. A pipeline from a borewell has been crushed to a flat state with the weight of the vehicles.
Besides, according to the villagers, the effluent water from the factories has been flowing into paddy fields in the vicinity and causing pollution and damage. Wildlife in the adjacent forests is also being disturbed, according to them.
The bitumen surface of the road has opened wide at many points. When there was no response to their complaints, the residents got together and blocked the movement of all heavy lorries with timber at Kotekani and protested on Monday.
They also demanded the closure of all wood-processing mills in the area.
