Chennai, Aug 14 (IANS) Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya congratulated the India A team for defeating Australia A in the final of the tri-series here on Friday.

India A recorded a four-wicket victory to win the tournament which also included South Africa A. Chasing the Australian total of 226/9 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, the hosts romped home with 39 balls to spare.

Dalmiya was all praise for India A coach Rahul Dravid and asserted that the former batting great is an ideal mentor for the upcoming players in the side.

“I also must congratulate Mr. Rahul Dravid for this victory. While we always believed that we have quality talent available, with Rahul’s involvement we could create an environment where it is like a learning curve for the upcoming players apart from it being a platform to showcase their talent”, Dalmiya was quoted as saying in a release.

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur also praised the team’s performance, adding that the board wants proper grooming of young players in order to ensure a strong bench strength for the senior India squad.

“The BCCI wants to ensure that the young players get adequately groomed in order to make certain that we have a strong bench strength which is a determining factor in modern day cricket. Events like these act like foundation from where to form a pool of players who could be groomed to graduate onto the next level,” Thakur said.

“Even during tri-series, mental toughness of the players was tested. After a loss, the management and players took stock of where they were and how they fell short. And it is indeed a sense of contentment that they could emerge as champions in the end.”
