Beltangady: Assault on Colleague – Journalists’ Bodies Seek Action and Protection

Beltangady: Ibrahim aka Asif Saralikatte, a reporter working for an afternoon daily from Mangaluru, was assaulted by some miscreants on Friday.

As he was returning home after work in the night and had reached Saralikatte, five persons waylaid him, tore his clothes and gave a threat to his life in abusive language.

They have been identified as Aziz, Nawaz, Sinan, Siddiq Bazar and Imran Chinganibettu. The journalist was gathering information to file an investigative report on cases relating to ganja trade, eve-teasing and other anti-social activities.

The taluk journalists’ union immediately met MLA Vasant Bangera and sought action against the miscreants. Besides contacting the district-level police officials, they have also submitted memoranda to the home minister through the tahsildar.

They, along with the district-level union, have demanded protection to journalists who as a call of duty had to keep reporting the ills of the society and expose wrong-doings.
