Beltangady: A sole elephant that strayed from the herd, which is commonly referred to as rogue elephant, is said to have crossed river Netravati from Indabettu village into Kadirudyavara village on Monday evening.
This has created scare among the residents of Tumbejalu, Belloor Bail and surroundings. It passed though the yard in front of the house of Monte Gowda in Tumbejalu.
Further on the same path, it was spotted by a few workers engaged in harvesting work in a rice field at Tumbejalu. At Aripu, it smashed open a wooden gate to enable itself to cross over.
Three months ago, a sole pachyderm had passed by the same area and is thought to have gone back to the forest using a different route.
The residents’ worry is undestandable. Because single elephants that stray from the herd tend to feel insecure and can react violently to any sign of threat. Their instinct goes by the saying that the best form of defence is offence.
