Beltangady: Woman’s Suicide at Home – Kin Suspect Foul Play, Demand Probe

Beltangady: Shakuntala aka Ashwini (27), residing in Govindoor near Gerukatte, was found hanging at home on Wednesday afternoon.

She, hailing from Mani in Bantwal, had been given in marriage to Prashant four years ago and they have a child of a year and ten months. On Wednesday, only she, her mother-in-law and the child were at home, while the others had gone out.

She had been seen washing clothes until 11 am. After some time, the child’s loud wails were being heard. The mother’s room was locked from inside. When the mother-in-law peeped inside through the window, she was seen hanging. Others and the police were informed.

Her mother Monakka from Mani has complained to the police seeking an investigation. She said that her daughter was very attached to the child and a case of suicide was unthinkable.

Shakuntala’s brothers too have said that their sister was not a mindset to end her life. Taking into consideration the appearance of the room, the possibility of the a suicide was remote, they said. Therefore, they have demanded a thorough investigation.

When her body was being taken to a government hospital, her mother’s family, apprehending manipulation under political pressure, insisted on having an autopsy done at a private hospital. Hence it was taken to a private hospital in Deralakatte.

MLA Vasant Bangera, revenue and police personnel and other visited the spot.
