Bengal braces for heavy rain

Kolkata, Aug 21 (IANS) West Bengal has been put on alert after the meteorological department forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, officials said on Sunday.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre here, most of the West Bengal districts including Birbhum, Malda, Murshidabad, North and South 24-Parganas, Kolkata and Howrah, will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall Sunday evening onwards.

“The situation is expected to improve only after Monday evening,” said G.C. Debnath of the Regional Meteorological Centre.

“Besides setting up a round-the-clock control room at the state secretariat, administration in all the districts has been put on alert and asked to take preventive measures. The disaster management has been put on standby,” said a state government official.

The state government has also urged the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to release water in a controlled manner and intimate the state government before the release.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has often blamed the DVC for inundating Bengal by releasing water without any prior intimation.

An alert has also been sounded for fisherman, asking them not to venture out into the sea.

Earlier in the month, at least eight fishermen died and many others went missing after their trawlers were caught in storm in the Bay of Bengal.
