Bengaluru: Bannanje Raja Withdraws Habeas Corpus Filed over Extradition Procedures

Bengaluru: Bannanje Raja, an underworld don of Udupi origin who was extradited from Morocco a few months ago, had recently filed a habeas corpus petition in the state high court over adherence to the relevant conditions by the state government officials.

In his petition, Raja had claimed that the officials could investigate and try him only under the accusations mentioned in the extradition papers. He further said that he was being framed in charges not included in the official papers signed with the Moroccan officials.

During the hearing, additional advocate general A S Ponnanna produced proof to the effect that investigations had been held only relating to the charges in the aforesaid papers. Taking cognizance of this, Justices H Billappa and K N Phaneendra decided to reject the appeal.

At this stage, the advocate for Raja said that his client would prefer to withdraw the appeal.
