Bengaluru: BMTC bus mows down Mount Carmel student

Bengaluru, DHNS: Poornima, a first-year PU student, was knocked down by a BMTC bus when she was trying to enter the Kempegowda bus stand in Bengaluru on Monday.
A student of Mount Carmel College was mowed down by a BMTC bus near the Kempegowda bus stand (KBS) on Monday morning. Poornima, 17, was a first year PU student and a resident of Balepet.

She was the elder daughter of Sundar Murthy, a flower merchant. As usual, Murthy had dropped his daughter near Sangam theatre at 7:45 am, from where she proceeded to the KBS to catch a bus to college, police said.

A KSRTC bus and a BMTC bus were racing against each other to enter the bus stand. Seeing a youth manoeuvre between the two speeding buses and reach the other end, Poornima also tried to cross the road the same way. But she was hit by the rear end of the bus which was taking a turn to enter the bus stand. She came under the rear wheel and suffered massive injuries, the police said.

A few autorickshaw drivers rushed her to a nearby hospital in an ambulance, but she was declared dead on arrival.

The driver, who didn’t stop the bus and instead proceeded to the bus stand, was later arrested by police based on details provided by an autorickshaw driver.

The victim’s father Murthy donated her eyes. “Poornima was very intelligent. We donated her eyes so that they give sight to visually impaired,” he said.
Murthy’s second daughter is an SSLC student.
