Bengaluru: Basic, painstaking investigation has helped the police arrest a BPO staffer who had crashed his motorcycle into an elderly destitute woman on the flyover near Electronics City on Friday night, killing her on the spot.

The 75-year-old woman was walking on the flyover near Rupena Agrahara when a speeding motorcycle hit her around 11 pm. The rider didn’t even care to stop or help the woman who had sustained grievous head injuries and died shortly thereafter.

When personnel from the Madiwala traffic police station reached the spot, they were dismayed that they were no eyewitness accounts. No motorist or passerby appeared to have witnessed the accident or jotted down the registration number of the two-wheeler.
But police combed through the flyover and found eight broken pieces of the bike’s number plate. They found two more pieces underneath. They managed to fashion a registration number from the name plate by using various permutations and combinations.

The number obtained thus was registered at an RTO in Andhra Pradesh. The website of the Andhra Pradesh transport department traced the number to one Gururaj Sai Vamsi, a native of Vijayawada, a senior police officer said.

“After a humongous task, we managed to find the vehicle number on the website and also learnt that the vehicle was purchased recently and belonged to Gururaj Sai Vamsi. We contacted transport officials in Vijayawada and got details about the vehicle owner. We then got the contact number of his relatives who said he is living in Bengaluru’s Electronics City,” the officer added.

Police then arrested Vamsi from a paying guest accommodation. “He was subjected to medical examination and it was found that he was not drunk (while riding the bike). But his rash and negligent riding caused the incident,” the officer said.

Vamsi works at a BPO in Bengaluru. A case has been registered against him at the Madiwala traffic police station.
