Bengaluru: The institution of Lokayukta is currently in a crippled state.
Lokayukta Y Bhaskar Rao, after charges of extortion were levelled against his son, has preferred to go on long leave instead of resigning. Before doing so, he has not delegated his powers to the next in the line. This has caused a total stalemate in the functioning of the institution.
With this view, former Lokayukta Justice Nitte Santosh Hegde spoke his mind here on Wednesday. On the sidelines of a function arranged to create awareness over organ donation at Vikram Hospital on Miller Road, he spoke to mediapersons.
He expressed sadness that no one has been put in charge, which smacked of a conspiracy to shut down the institution. The complaints and cases hitherto handled by it were going backstage.
Delays on account of it could give scope to destruction of evidence to favour the accused. Hence the government should immediately appoint a Lokayukta or a Upa (deputy) Lokayukta to allow its smooth functioning, he added.
