Bengaluru, (dhns): Mayor B N Manjunath Reddy on Monday directed the BBMP engineers to remove encroachment on stormwater drains on a priority basis to prevent flooding in the City.
In his maiden meeting with the officials as mayor, Reddy gave the Palike engineers a set of directions with emphasis on removing unauthorised structures from the stormwater drains. He told them to take up the remodeling of SWD sincerely.
Reddy said, “The water percolation is not happening as the City has turned into a concrete jungle. Due to the encroachment of the SWDs, the run-off of the rainwater is hindered, leading to flooding and waterlogging.”
Expressing his dissatisfaction over the present speed of anti-encroachment drive to reclaim SWDs, the mayor directed the Palike officials to speed up the process and demolish structures mercilessly.
During the meeting, BBMP Commissioner G Kumar Naik gave a presentation on the financial position of the Palike and briefed the mayor about the measures taken to increase the revenue such as – special drive to collect property taxes, issuing fresh trade licences and renewing the old ones, checking misappropriation of funds by introducing online payment system and so on.
The mayor was of the view that the Quality Control Cell of the Palike should be improved by appointing some more engineers. He also asked the Palike officials to ensure that contractors carry out road repair, which they had constructed months ago.
