BJP distances from Madhav’s remark, faces oppn barbs

New Delhi (PTI): The BJP distanced itself from Ram Madhav’s ‘Akhand Bharat’ remarks, clarifying though the leader was entitled to his views, for the party and government India and Pakistan were two sovereign nations.

The BJP general secretary’s remark, however, provoked stinging barbs from Congress, which said the saffron party will require a “heart transplant” to achieve the goal, while CPI-M dubbed Madhav’s utterances on ‘Akhand Bharat’ as “surest way” of derailing the dialogue with Pakistan.

Responding to a series of questions on the issue, BJP spokesperson M J Akbar recalled the speech of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee delivered in Lahore in 1999 wherein he had said India and Pakistan negotiate as sovereign nations. “And that fact is a fact,” he said.

When asked as to why an important general secretary made these remarks when the stand of the party and the government are clear, he said Madhav “was answering a particular question …he has a right to his own views, but the government’s position requires no clarification.”

Congress termed Madhav’s idea of United India, which would include the present day Pakistan and Bangladesh, as “brilliant” but said for that BJP needed to have a “large heart”.

“It’s a brilliant idea. It should happen. He talked about it in future terms, but presently a grim situation is going on in the country. The economy is in bad shape and security of women, the dalits, the minorities….these are things which need to be addressed and you have a problem with minorities in India,” Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said.

“The thought process is good, but the ‘karma’ (action) they have been practising in India needs to be restrained. The word intolerance must move out of our dictionaries. Just going to birthday party of the counterpart of Pakistan does not mean that you have given up intolerance.

“It (intolerance) by motormouths has to stop. If you are thinking in terms of ‘Akhand Bharat’ then you need to have a large heart, and (for that) it (BJP) needs a heart transplant,” Vadakkan said.

CPI called Madhav’s comments as “highly provocative and deplorable”.
“Ram Madhav’s comments are highly provocative and deplorable…it is the surest way to derail any effort for a dialogue with Pakistan,” senior party leader D Raja said, adding both Madhav and RSS should acknowledge the reality that today India, Bangladesh and Pakistan are sovereign nations.

He also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP clarify their stand on ‘Akhand Bharat’.

Madhav had recently said RSS believes that India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will one day reunite again not by war but through “popular goodwill”.

“The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) still believes that one day these parts, which have for historical reasons separated only 60 years ago, will again, through popular goodwill, come together and Akhand Bharat will be created,” he told Doha-based Al Jazeera TV channel, adding “as an RSS member, I also hold on to that view.”.

Though the interview was recorded earlier, its broadcast coincided with the surprise visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lahore to meet his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif on Friday.

  1. BJP distances from Madhav’s remark, faces oppn barbs-Reports

    Dear readers,

Head to Head – Is Modi’s India flirting with fascism?

Now, Madhav’s “apology” (in an interview to India Today’s Rahul Kanwal) over the comment later, if what he has said is part of a widely-held belief system that the RSS-BJP combine adheres to, at least from an ideological standpoint, then why should he be singled out for exposing an open secret? And when he betrays his case by saying “your ISIS” to Mehdi Hasan, a British-Muslim journalist of Indian descent, isn’t he belying the very prejudice – that all Muslims must be held responsible for Islamic fundamentalism and global terrorism that ISIS, Al Qaeda perpetrate – that was being debated on the show?

And, weren’t the panellists Nitasha Kaul and Mehboob Khan proved right when their co-panellist Gautam Sen, a professor at the London School of Economics and “president, World Association of Hindu Academicians”, said India was “under a 1,200-year-old occupation” until Independence? Or, did he mean until Modi Sarkar?

It has certainly pulled pants down of RSS spokersperson.

  2. Let me repeat what I wrote in response to one Roy on this topic.

This interview in AlJazeera was designed to fool political illiterates by handpicking audience and panel to project ‘intolerant’ India image. Most of the audience were Muslims with anti-hindu sentiments. Then there were a handful of self-hating Hindus like the lady with big nose and another guy who compared RSS to ISIS (he got a nice ‘kapaala moksha’ by Sri Ram Madhav!! smiles)

When you have a Kashmiri Pandit (lady with big nose) bad mouthing Indian Army and refuse to say a single word on Pak-sponsored terrorism and kashmiri pundit genocide, you don’t need any proof of bias, do you? Al Jazeera is funded by Qatar who also happens to be funding ISIS and other Islamic outfits. Mehdi Hasan is a well known Islamist whose only job is to attack West and other democratic nations while providing endless excuses to terrorist groups. There are plenty of videos of him justifying terror outfits and blame it all on West. For example, look at his interview of Tarik Ramadan (grandson of founder of Muslim brotherhood – a terrorist organization) and see Audience reaction. They were cheering this pro-sharia, Islamist even when he refused to give a clear answer on stoning!!

This interview is cheered by only two groups in India – Pro-pakistani elements in Indian society and another particular minority group known for its confused, self-hating people!!

  3. This interview is cheered by only two groups in India – Pro-pakistani elements in Indian society and another particular minority group known for its confused, self-hating people!!-Atheist Mr.Original pai

Sir, One of the embarrassing moment Former RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav slipped his tongue and referred the anchor to ‘Your ISIS’. Among the pro-RSS panelist blamed the lone human right activist penalist as anti national. The doctrine of RSS teaching is same regardless of their geographic location.

Now Original RSS pai is using the same language of Madhav in International media.

If anyone criticize Modi and RSS they are directly portrayed as anti-Indian. But Original has privilege to post anti Islam links but refuse to accept the freedom of speech.

If British PM David Cameron does not came forward when question on ‘Intolerance’ was asked,he will be still using M-R-S,Alexander,Pseudo science based mythology to defend.

If our mass media follow the same standard of Journalism,Narendra Modi and RSS political wing BJP need to be Dehydrated by Karan Thapar and Chakravyuh of NDTV.

    Chakravyuh with Narendra Modi

A very apparent reason is Modi’s suspicion that the questions are unfailingly of malicious intent (and the smirk doesn’t help). He is very defensive very quickly, and takes any mention of the riots as an offence. Thanks to the unnecessary and unnatural conduction of the interview in English.
