Rome, Feb 1 (IANS/AKI) An explosion at a villa in northwest Italy killed a 76-year-old woman on Monday and injured Italian actor Gabriel Garko, who was treated in hospital for a head injury, cuts and grazes.

The blast in the coastal city of Sanremo is believed to have been caused by a gas leak and occurred around 9 a.m.

A part of the building collapsed, killing Maria Grazia Gugliermetti, who was crushed to death by falling masonry.

Garko is due to appear at the popular Sanremo musical Festival next week, but his agent said it was too early to say if the 43-year-old actor would be fit enough to take part.

Gugliermetti was the mother of the villa’s owner.
