Bodies of Mexicans killed in Egypt attack repatriated

Cairo, Sep 22 (IANS) The bodies of eight Mexican tourists killed in an accidental attack by Egyptian security forces in the Western Desert, were flown back to Mexico on Tuesday.

Ahmed Hamza, an official at Cairo International Airport told EFE that the bodies were brought to the airport on Monday night and were loaded onto an aircraft on Tuesday morning.

The flight, which will halt in Amsterdam before heading to Mexico, was arranged after authorities finished the autopsies of the bodies and other procedures necessary for repatriation.

Eight Mexican tourists and four Egyptians were “mistakenly” killed on September 13 while several others were injured in an attack by Egyptian security forces who were chasing jihadis in the oasis area of the Western Desert.

Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu revealed on Monday that the arrival of the remains of the eight tourists in Mexico was expected on Wednesday.

The attack, carried out by mistake by Egyptian security forces who mistook the tourists for terrorists, also killed four Egyptian civilians.

Massieu announced on Monday that Mexico will send lawyers from the foreign affairs ministry to Egypt to follow up on the investigation into the attack.
