Confessions of a Movie Buff |
|
By Sangeetha Gopi, Oman [ Published Date: February 18, 2010 ]
Everyone loves movies, well at least most people do. And the thrill of watching a movie on the first day first show is all the more thrilling (well lot of people have told me about this). I have been waiting for a very long time to understand what this 'thrill' is all about and to experience the excitement of first day first show. Being a student in one of the most prominent colleges of this city, making time out for first day first show was cumbersome.
My long wait finally bore fruit when our college declared a holiday on the occasion of Shiv Ratri on a Friday. My happiness knew no bounds as it was a Friday, THE DAY of a new release. And guess what, the much awaited Shah Rukh Khan- Kajol starrer My Name Is Khan (MNIK) was the movie to be released. What more can an SRK fan ask for? Being a mass communication student and knowing the way films work (actually you just have to be a movie buff to know all this, no need for a specialized degree), I decided to go one day prior to book my tickets.
On reaching the multiplex, a queer presence made me wonder what was wrong. A blue van was parked outside the multiplex, and my first guess- "Hmmm. Some VIP is around here." On second thoughts the 'VIP' presence did not sound very convincing. And then lighting struck (of course it was not raining, just a figure of speech). The blue van was here for security reasons, security for the theatre and the people who throng it, security against some extremist groups who were threatening to stop the screening of the movie, who were threatening to disrupt public life. My heart raced as I ran up the steps to reach the booking counter, hoping against hope that the screening not be cancelled. As luck would have it the ticket counter was of not much help. The movie had only tele-booking and also the officials could not promise the release of MNIK as charted. Trying my luck I kept contacting the multiplex to book tickets but every time I tried, the operation was not successful. I had to go back dejected but with a little hope that coming in person the next day would ensure tickets. But as fate would have it, the movie was not released, well not at least in the morning or afternoon shows.
My dream of ever making it for the first day first show was shattered. As I read through the papers the next day of the film running to packed houses in Mumbai and Delhi, my heart sobbed, but at the same time went out to the people who came out in solidarity to oppose fundamentalist groups trying to hinder others life and dictate terms. Why should we the citizens of India, whether we belong to the north or the south, or the east or the west, live in fear? Why should a group of lunatics dictate or control us? Why should we let this happen to our democratic country? It is time we voice and act against this injustice. Together we can prove that no forces-internal or external can force us to do what we don't want to do. Jai Hind.

: Your right didi.......
Its high time we Indians realise the strength of staying united and fighting against such odds.....
And anyone can say what i just said..... Actions speak louder than words.... You've acted your part in creating awareness... Friends lets do our part by not letting such a hindrance prevail in our country.... Good work my dear....

: I totally agree with Deepak, Shubod, and Ganesh. Shahrukh should make sensible comments. He should have commented like other IPL owners. He praised pakistan only for one reason, that is MONEY. He wants his movie to do well in pakistan and other muslim countries which sympathize with pakistan. Shahrukh is a shrewd businessman and does good marketing. He just wants to sell his product and make huge money without caring for his countrymens' sentiments. I would advise Shahrukh to go to the borders and ask our brave jawans about cricketing ties with pakistan. I know they will never agree. They are the real heroes. Jai Hind. |

: Mr Rajshekar,
Peace, do you understand the real meaning of peace. Do you know, we have lost so many of our soldiers in this peace process. Probably if you had any of your own soldier in our army, you would know this better. I lost my own maternal uncle recently in this chaos. It hurts.
I have nothing against SRK. I adore him as he rules Bollywood as he has come up to this level without godfather. The point here is SRK is a responsible individual and he says "Pak is a gud neighbour" . HOw is pak a gud neighbour, please explain me. why cant SRK make movies on happening issues in india. Its quite obvious for US to be hostile towards certain community bcoz time and again it has been proved that they contribute to terrorism. Instead SRK could have said "We indians are a better neighbour for everyone". Have a serious thought. What happened to my uncle someday we all have to face this.
Bharat Mata ki jai, Hindustan amar rahegaa. |

: Dear Sangeetha
We can not change our neighbours and we have to accept this. SRK comments are towards peace, which people like salian never understand as hatred is grown so much in them.
Wake up call must be given to such people who wish to divide the society. Whereas MNIK is an sincere attempt to bring people together. Everyone must watch such movie and understand the morale in right spirit and spread peace, peace and peace.

: Hi Sangeetha,
Shah Rukh Khan recently said " Pak is a gud neighbour". Do you really believe that Pakistan is a good neighbour. You are a mass communication student and please analyze this. I am not being fanatic but the truth is that he is just minting money by selling indian sentiments. Do you really know that he even charges for doing a pulse polio endrosement.
Please have a serious thought bout this sangeetha.
Regards

: Dear Sangeetha,
I donot get your passion for this movie. Why is that u indian women forget the fact that the same sharukh Khan said that " Pakistan is a gud neighbour". How on earth can he say that. Is Pakistan a real gud neighbour. Wake up young girl. You need to get your basics right.
He is just an actor and he is making crores selling sentiments, that too at our cost. Even if this movie does not show up in mangalore, he has already made enough money overseas. Finally tell me, please justify how will this movie infuence you. Please use your sense, please. This is just a movie and he is like any other actor who always gains publicity by acting as though he is very humble human being. Donot forget that he is making millions out of your sentiments. Wake up. |

: Pretty well reflects the anxiety of every SRK fan in the country. But in a country where there is so much freedom that anyone can do what they like this kind of menace will go on. If politics is mixed anything result is nothing but chaos. So SRK was the recent target tomorrow someone else will be. How well we the Indians have adjested with this fact ?...Well written... |

: I am not really a fan of Shah Rukh Khan. He does lot of over acting in my opinion. He reminds me of Dilip Kumar who also used to do over acting most of the times. I prefer to see Amir Khan's movie any day. Shivaji Ganesan, Rajanikanth are other over acting actors. Kamala haasan perhaps is the best actor India has ever produced. Raj Kapoor was also a great actor. Amitabh impressed me a lot. May be I was younger those days. Watching Deewaar at Nartaki, Sholay at Kapali and then Santosh was really exciting. I have seen several Hindi movies on the first day, first show. [NOT MORNING SHOW but evening show which is called First show. There are 4 shows, Morning show, Matinee, First show and second show.] I have seeen many second shows in Majestic area theatres. I was not particularly fond of Kannada movies except few. It was mainly Hindi, many English and few Kannada movies. I have seen Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam also. Maro Charitra was one of the best Telugu movies I have seen. It was remade in Hindi later as Ek Duje Ke liye. I had the misfortune of watching a M G R movie called Meenava Nanban where Jayalalitha was the heroine if I remember it right. I also have seen Slum Dog Millionaire on DVD. I did not like it. |

: SRK did a good job in this movie. The story was very applicable to the north american situation. People may object this movie in India but North America the movie is good hit. Also, in North America Indians and Pakistnis are living in good relations even though there is hidden or open racism for color people. |

: My friends in Bangalore who watched the movie by spending hundreds of rupees abused me for advising them watch the movie. To pacify them at last the deal was settled by promising them a treat in Mangalore when they visit here, to compensate the expenses. As per public views if not the Shivsena threat, this movie would not be able to make any impact on box-office as it looks like a documentary aimed at defaming west. Fortunately I was kept away from watching this film, which saved me something to spend in the weekend. I hope Sharukh’s punks (fans in Hindi) will not get offended by my views. |

: Shahrukh is the Looser. The GOVT. Congress, Media all went behind to support the MNIK. Shahrukh is not correct when he says that Pakistan is a good neighbour. After all so many innocent peoples lost their lives in 26-11 which was the handiwork of the Pak's State machinery. So he should have been cautious in making such statement.
And I am very glad that People have rejected MNIK.

Om Shetty, Kuwait: KHAN for KHAN AAMIR is better, and this SRK movie is really bad, boring and useless. |

Deepak Shetty, India
: SRK shud understand the sentiments of our people especially after 26/11 attack on Mumbai sponsored by Pakistan knowingly. How can you keep sports & politics separate? We can see how it effected pakis when none of the players were included in the IPL.The solution: The Paki cricketers themselves shud refuse to play cricket for their country until their govt stops terrorism...So SRK this is "common sense & not logic required & am writing as a patriot & not on behalf of SENA..Jai Hind |

Ganesh Kasargod, India
: When u r supporting pakistni player for IPL - 3 season, at that time sena got angry. Even public is also very much disappointed with Shahrukh. Our soldiers r dying on border and this guys want to take pakistani.
Just guest if PAKISTANI MILITANT wil kill ur family or and family members than also shahrukh want to take pakistani players. If single person will die in millitant attack fro sharukhs family than country see whether he wil support pakistani players or not ? |

jasun, UAE: Movie is not so good, quite boring. Producers should pick better subjects rather than picking this kind of subject to make movie. |
