Caste Prevents Marriage – Young Woman Follows Lover’s Example in Suicide

Puttur: They belonged to the same faith, but the caste factor was a roadblock on the path of uniting in marriage.

Shivaram (29), a resident of Alagurimajal of Nattibail in Uppinangady in the taluk, and Pushpalata (23) of Amchinadka in Bellare of Sullia taluk, were in love for quite some time and wanted to get married.

But his family objected to the proposal citing caste factor. Disappointed by their opposition, he ended his life on Monday, Mar 7 by drinking poison.

Pushpalata, who was employed in Mangaluru, on hearing the news, arrived in Uppinangady and took the decision to follow him in death.

She too consumed poison in an attempt to end her life. The Uppinangady police immediately took her to a hospital in the vicinity. For further treatment she was then rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru. But she breathed her last on Tuesday.

Many of her well-wishers expressed sadness that although both belonged to the same religion, the caste bias prevailed and two precious lives were lost.
