Chikkamagaluru: Thieves targeted Sangeeta Jewellers located on M G Road in the city earlier this week and took away gold and silver, besides cash, of total value of Rs 80,34,000.
The theft did not come to the notice of the owner whose house is located just behind the shop. Around midnight, the thieves appear to have used handlebars to break open the rolling shutters.
About 2.50 kgs of gold, 25 kgs of silverware and Rs 85,000 in cash were found missing when the shop opened for business the next morning. An attempt to break open a safe locker in the next room was also detected.
The room had not been locked. But since it had a combination lock and secret numbers were required to open it, the locker remained safe. The thieves left the premises by using another door leading to the road.
There is a CCTV system installed there but it was not switched on in the night. Hence the police could not get any clues. The police took the owner to task for not keeping the system in operation around the clock.
