Chinese shares open lower

Beijing, April 25 (IANS) Chinese stocks opened lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.31 percent to open at 2,949.97 points.

The smaller Shenzhen index opened 0.29 percent lower at 10,122.13 points, Xinhua news agency reported.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China’s NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, was down 0.39 percent to open at 2,128.66 points.

Tokyo shares open lower

Tokyo, April 25 (IANS) Tokyo shares opened trading on Monday slightly lower as investors locked in recent gains after a four-day rise.

At 9.15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 34. 27 points, or 0.20 percent, from last Friday to 17,538.22, Xinhua news agency reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 3.31 points, or 0.24 percent, to 1,404.19.

Chinese yuan weakens against USD

Beijing, April 25 (IANS) The central parity rate of the Chinese yuan weakened to 222 basis points to 6.5120 against the US dollar on Monday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.

In China’s spot foreign exchange market, the yuan is allowed to rise or fall by 2 percent from the central parity rate each trading day, Xinhua news agency reported.

The central parity rate of the yuan against the US dollar is based on a weighted average of prices offered by market makers before the opening of the interbank market each business day.
