Bogota, Nov 10 (IANS) Colombian football federation (FCF) president Luis Bedoya has quit amid allegations linking him to FIFA’s corruption scandal, a media report said.
In a statement issued on Monday, Bedoya cited personal reasons for his decision, Xinhua reported.
Earlier this year, Bedoya said he had made all his own personal bank accounts and those of the FCF available to investigators, adding that he would step down if irregularities were found.
“There are no secret or inflated accounts,” Bedoya said in June, days after seven FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich.
Bedoya, who had held the position since 2006, oversaw a resurgent period for Colombia’s national team.
In 2012, he was responsible for signing Argentine coach Jose Pekerman, who guided the Cafeteros to the World Cup quarterfinals, 16 years after their last appearance in football’s showpiece tournament.
Bedoya’s decision means he will also lose his place in FIFA’s executive committee.
