Congress wants strong rebuttal of ‘no surgical strikes’ claim

New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS) The Congress fully supports the government on the surgical strikes, but the government should strongly rebut Pakistan’s denial of the Indian Army action, senior party leader Digvijaya Singh said on Tuesday.

“We have no doubt about the surgical strikes, as claimed by the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and the Government of India. The Congress party from day one has fully supported the operation. And, we are proud of the fact that the Indian Army has done an excellent job,” Singh told India Today news channel.

“The only problem is that a doubt is being created — and forget about the Pakistani media, whom we don’t give any credence — since even the United Nations official spokesperson is quoting UN observers in the Kashmir Valley saying they did not directly witness any surgical strikes,” he said.

“Now this has put us in a difficult situation. If an independent, autonomous body like the United Nations is making an official statement, then it becomes necessary for the government to counter it.”

The Congress leader said that it is for the government to decide how they would do it, but the government has to “strongly rebut the claim that no surgical strike took place”.

Digvijaya also took exception to another senior Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam’s remarks that the “strikes were fake”.

“I think he (Sanjay Nirupam) should not have called it ‘farzi’ (fake). We have no doubts about the veracity of the strike,” Singh added.

  1. True that the terror camps operate across the Line of Control. No denying the fact that every country has the right to act in order to safeguard its sovereignty and people. But these days, actions are taken more often without being declared than by making them public. If at all “surgical strikes” were made and the successes claimed were true, where was the need to create hype around this? Such strikes need to be made recurrently but where is the need to declare them? Does Pakistan claim responsibility for what happens in Kashmir or Punjab at it behest?
By making loud claims, the BJP government only succeeded in creating a war hysteria in the country. Within 24 hours of jubilation, fears of reprisals overtook the country especially in the border villages. And surprisingly, even this fear was hyped with the channels continuously reporting how the villagers in the border areas have moved out of their homes fearing attacks. Several hundred thousand people were evacuated.
Within 72 hours, Indian side was telephoning Pakistani side to deescalate the situation. Why such a hurry of de-escalation? What we ultimately achieved is loss of a Jawan in Baramulla, a few injuries and a jawan captured. While our media was busy giving hype to the developments, there was hardly any coverage in the international media except for a brief period on the first day.
It will be no surprise if in coming days, Mr Modi will find it hard to convince the people that the aims of the “surgical strikes” was indeed national, not political. With Punjab and other elections round the corner, we can expect a bitter struggle for power.
Hopefully, honest views on national issues will remain the guiding factor in the future politics. If we have to tackle Pakistan, the only option for us is to endear Kashmiris. If they start feeling safe and secure in India, Pakistan and China cannot harm us. If we have troubled waters in our lands, others will find opportunity to fish.

  2. Many on this forum have voted for Congress party due to ‘vote bank’ politics. Remember – this is the party you guys have been voting all these years!! Even Diggy Raaja finds his own party’s remarks unacceptable!! In addition to Congress party, there are these Bollywood unknowns who are also behaving anti-India for reasons one can only speculate!! Here is one Mahesha Bhatta getting ‘Arnab Goswami’ treatment!! LOL

    • Is Sanaaaaathaaaaaanaaaa dwesha the main reason? – Namme Yumreeki ThyampaNNA

      Oye Rampa da Tooth Shaker(a),

We are talking of post Pak’s post-surgical recovery and you have to bring in your fav topic – SD, eh? What a joker you are!

  3. I am shaking my head in utter disbelief when I read reports of how divided we are as a people. Trained terrorist are being pushed into India forever to create Mayhem and Slaughter, and people DO NOT want to even condemn terrorism, because they claim to be “Stars or Cricketers”. This is utter nonsense.

Though there is no denying that there are many that are having legitimate issues and concerns, and all this should be addressed and redressed. But living in India and supporting Pakistan in anyway shape or form is an absolute No, No.

    Shame on YOU.
