‘Cow Safer Than a Muslim in India’: Shashi Tharoor in Parliament

NEW DELHI: Stressing on ‘growing intolerance’ in the country, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Tuesday that a cow was safer in India than a Muslim.

Participating in the debate on intolerance in the Lok Sabha, Mr Tharoor said a Bangladeshi friend of his on a visit told him that “Islamic fundamentalists in his country were having a field day attacking India as a place where it is safer to be a cow than a Muslim.”

Attacking the Modi government, Mr Tharoor said that it cannot promote “Make in India” abroad while there was still “Hate in India”. Mr Tharoor said that the Prime Minister was silent over the issue while his party colleagues are resorting to “political polarisation” in the country.

“They are such explosives who can destroy Indian ideology,” he said following it with a Hindi couplet, “Mazhab nahi sikhata aapas mein bair rakhna” (Religion does not teach animosity against each other)

While Mr Tharoor made sharp attacks at the ruling government over ‘intolerance’, he spared some praise for its leader and said that Narendra Modi was a “different person” before becoming the Prime Minister. He cited how the then Chief Minister of Gujarat had avoided resorting to “divisive politics” unlike any “clever politician” when bombs exploded during his rally in Gandhi Maidan in Bihar in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

“He (PM Modi) continued his speech peacefully and so no one in the crowd of 3-4 lakh came to know of the blasts that had killed six people. He did not try to reap benefits of divisive politics,” Mr Tharoor said.

Mr Tharoor said that India cannot sell itself to the world as a “land of pluralism, tolerance and Gandhianism while encouraging intolerance, communal hatred and minority insecurity within the country.”

“But what has happened to Modiji now. Where has he lost is voice. After he became Prime Minister, he has forgotten the policy of taking along everyone. His senior party leaders are using political polarisation but he is silent,” Mr Tharoor said.

  1. Shashi Tharoor in Parliament expressed the saner voice. Would Modi heed to it? Modi should know that the foreign investments would not come to India due to polarization of religions, for political gains by the RSS.

Coming to change of laws and procedures for encouraging development and foreign investments, the Congress must support such changes, but with a caveat. The condition president is that Modi must personally say sorry to Congress on the floor of the parliament for his party having disabled the Congress party to do the very same things which Modi wants to do now.

RSS wanted to get political advantage by disabling the Congress to do reforms, at the cost of the country becoming stagnant! The spoiled image of the Congress must be refurbished, before the BJP expects co-operation by the Congress.

    • The BJP party got too arrogant due to the majority they got, and became overconfident to make a detour of the nation in their own will. Not to offend the party comrades, Mr. Modi began to act like a political diplomat, thus began to reap the wild harvest at New Delhi, Bihar, in his own constituency Varanasi and the rest.

Now, even a great percentage of the BJP party followers and leaders are now caught up in a confusion about the march of the nation. The turn of events are leading to a day the Congress party will recapture the leading role of the nation to bring back a solid spirit of tolerance and religious freedom in India.

  2. If Mr.Modi genuinely wants a stable India and honest to himself and his post as PM must respond to all those fringe elements to shut up and co-operate with him for the development of the country. I am not very sure he can do that because of the pressure from their parent organization RSS. The motive of RSS and Hindu Fringe will never change until they make India into a Hindu Rastra. If Modi has to keep them happy, he will act a dual role and compromise the interest of minorities and even the economy. You cannot serve two masters at the same time.

The power of media and specially the social media is so strong and ruthless these days, nothing will go into hiding. If Mr.Modi thinks that he will play a dual role, he will be exposed and will be shunted by people who need urgent reforms. He could have done miracles with the majority support in the parliament and brought reforms in a much faster pace. He delayed this and there is no much time for him to waste. The young population of India is impatient and they need jobs.

    • Mr. Modi’s double acting is now revealed to the whole world, and the foreign countries are too cautious about the deviation of the nation from her secular foundation to a theocracy. How the BJP comrades like the Governor Assam and the CM of Haryana can tell totally terrorizing statements targeting the minorities, especially the Muslim community of 173 million people, the 2nd largest Muslim population in a country?

Now the Central Government has been turned like a flying experience; the Pilot Mr. Modi and a few cockpit crew piloting a rudderless aircraft through whirlwind.

  3. “Mr Tharoor said a Bangladeshi friend of his on a visit told him that…” report quoting one Shashi Tharoor quoting an unknown guy from Bangladesh as if it should be a driving factor in our policy debates.

This is called dumbing down of conversation!! Apart from the fact that this is simply false, the approach of quoting unknown sources to discourage any response to radical elements is a very lazy way to debate the issue by Regressive Left. We can see the same thing taking place here in Western societies as well. The Regressive Left is always known for complaining about how any action to confront ‘death cult’ would, in fact, encourage radical elements to recruit more youngsters to fight against West!! This is like arguing how a strong lock on your front door would encourage robbers to break into your house!!

This reflects unbelievable amount of stupidity!! No wonder this kind of anti-intellectual, anti-indian, suicidal rhetoric sells very well with followers of congress party!!
