Defence ministry seeks CBI probe against two serving major generals

New Delhi, Jan 28 (IANS) In a possible first, the defence ministry has asked CBI to probe two serving major generals for posessing disproportionate assets and accepting bribes for promotions, sources in the ministry said on Thursday.

The two officers are Major General S.S. Lamba of the Army Service Corps (ASC) and Major General Ashok Kumar of the Army Ordinance Corps (AOC), the sources said.

According to sources, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has written to CBI for the probe.

Sources said the enquiry has been ordered on the basis of complaints received against the two officers.

Both officers were awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the second highest decoration for distinguished service, in 2015.

In the past too, the Indian Army has proceeded against several officers – some as senior as lieutenant generals – but these have been in the shape of in-house General Courts Martial
