Devotee from Hejamadi Gets Stuck under Wheels of Temple Car, Dies

Udupi: The annual fair of Shri Mahalingeshwara temple in Hejamadi in the district attracted huge crowds on Saturday night.

As part of the programme, the temple car (rath) was being drawn by the devotees. Sanjeeva Acharya (77), a devotee from Ajaltota in Hejamadi, was standing in the field by the side and watching the proceedings.

As the car moved, because of the stampede, Acharya is said to have got stuck under the huge wheels and got critically injured. Even after being rushed to the hospital immediately, he did not survive.

He was a skilled wood sculptor and had also played female roles – that of Shri Devi in particular – Yakshagana shows in the past. He is survived by three sons and three daughters.

A case has been registered by the Padubidri police.
