Don’t assign judicial work to Justice Karnan, orders SC

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court today asked the Chief justice of Madras High Court not to assign any judicial work to its controversial judge, Justice C S Karnan, who has been transferred to the Calcutta High Court.

The apex court passed the order on an application moved by the Registrar of Madras High Court, who is also private secretary to the Chief Justice, seeking an order to restrain Justice Karnan from doing any judicial work.

The apex court noted the application moved by senior advocate K K Venugopal which said Justice Karnan, on receipt of the transfer order, had suo motu decided to pass an order against his own transfer and had listed the matter for today.

Taking note of this submission, a bench comprising Justices J S Khehar and R Banumathi said, “We consider it just and appropriate to allow the Chief Justice of the High Court not to assign any judicial work to him (Justice Karnan).”

The bench which perused the affidavit filed by the Registrar, said “consequent upon the copy of this order is furnished to Justice Karnan by the Registrar of the HC, it will be open to Justice Karnan to enter his appearance before this court, if desired by him, in the pending matter (before the apex court). If he does so, it will be at his own cost.”

  1. Dear readers,

Act against Devadasi system, SC tells States

In previous verdict the Supreme Court has slapped a fine of Rs. 25,000 on the Centre for failing to file on time an affidavit on women being forced to become ‘devadasis’ and the possibility of abolition of the age-old tradition.

Condemning the prevalence of the illegal practice of “dedicating” young girls as Devadasis, the Supreme Court on Friday described the practice as an “evil” done to women, who were later even subjected to sexual exploitation and pushed into prostitution.

The apex court started hearing on the issue when apprised of how Dalit girls were dedicated as Devadasis in Uttangi Mala Durga Temple in Davanagere district of Karnataka.

But some women’s activists have branded the online campaign a gimmick and said Mr Modi’s government in fact slashed funding on “everything that deals with women” in its last budget.

PM Modi posted on Twitter”I urge all of you, share a #SelfieWithDaughter,” and asked “Beti bachao, beti padhao”.

Is BJP playing won’t bank politics by silently allowing age old practice like ‘Jallikattu’ and Sati in Rajasthan?Where are those Moral police patrol following ‘love jihad’?Why can’t those thousands of RSS swayamsevak marry socially boycotted lady and give her decent life?

    Jai hind
