The Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts abound with large number of christian places of
worship, such as churches and chapels, as the christian population is largely confined to
these coastal areas. Christianity came to this area in the 16th century with the portuguese
who erected prayer houses primarily for their own use on areas they landed. As christianity
spread there was a need for building chapels and churches to serve the growing populations of
the christians, spiritually. Thus we see churches beloging to different christian
denominations all over the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts.
Ekata- was a project undertaken to collect information on all the churches, and to organize
the material in one book, in the form of directory containing brief details about these
churches with their historical background so that this information could be recorded for
posterity and the book be used as book of reference.
Mangalorean.com is proud to bring this book online for all the readers to know more about
the churches and history of these churches. We thank Rev. Dr. Ronald Cutinha the editor of
this book for willing to publish this book on Mangalorean.com
