England should advance past group stage in 2016 Euros: FA chairman

London, Jan 6 (IANS) Football Association (FA) chairman Greg Dyke on Wednesday said England will shoot themselves if they fail to progress from their group stages in Euro 2016.

“We’ll all shoot ourselves (if England fail to progress from their group),” Dyke was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Roy Hodgson’s side features alongside the likes of Wales, Russia and Slovakia for the tournament in France, which starts on June 10.

“We’ve got to get out of that group. If we don’t, that really is bad news for English football,” he said.

Dyke was at an event which was held to mark the 50th anniversary of England’s 1966 World Cup win. The chairman believes the young generation can bring back the quadrennial trophy again.

“We owe it to a generation of teenage dreamers to show we can do it again,” he said.

He added that he is hopeful that the national team would clinch a world tournament very soon.

“The FA is the richest FA in the world, the most income. The FA has to take some of the blame (For the poor performance of England in recent years). We should have won a tournament in the last 50 years. We haven’t. But we will win in the next 50 years, hopefully long before,” he said.
