Mangaluru: Among the many congested road-crossing with heavy traffic movement in the City, road crossing near Mini Vidhana Soudha and Town Hall is one among them, where thousands of people alighting from the trains have to cross this busy road, either to go to school/college, market, hospital, shopping spree etc etc. Considering all the hassles and inconveniences faced by these commuters – the state, district and MCC officials have finally decided to build a Sky-Walk to ease all these problems.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Lobo said, “This Sky-Walk project to be constructed at a whopping cost of Rs 1.57 Crore will be funded and built by the Karnataka Coastal Development Authority (KCDA) for the Mangaluru City Corporation. KCDA will now release Rs 81.2 lakh for the project. The city corporation will have to bear the minimal cost as the Nirmiti Kendra will build it, where now the Mayor has promised to bear 5% of the expenses. As per the plan, there will be escalators on both sides only for going up, but for climbing down, commuters have to use only stairs. This is mainly to get more people to use the sky-walk. After building the Sky-Walk, the authorities will hand it over to the civic body for maintenance. The matter of building a Sky-Walk had come up for approval at the council meeting of the corporation last month. The council had referred it to the Standing Committee for Town Planning and Improvement.”

Minister Rai addressing the gathering said, “I think once this Sky-Walk comes up it will ease all the problems faced by thousands of commuters who try to cross this busy road near mini Vidhana Soudha and Town Hall every single day. Passengers who come from Mangaluru Central Railway Station who cross the road in this area to board city buses are the ones mostly affected now. As per the civil engineer and the contractor who will undertake this project, the Sky-Walk will be completed within 10-12 months, provided the funds are made available. This project once completed will be yet another feather in the cap for Congress and its development work for the City. I feel proud that such a project has been planned by the district authorities”. Project Director of Nirmiti Kendra, Er Rajendra Kalbavi compered the programme.

  1. “Sky Walk” concept is another symbol of progress in all that Mangalore aspires for their people in their daily welfare in life. Communication Transportation and the convenience in the daily well being of mankind will bring satisfaction in the daily movements from place to place and make life simple and comfortable. Having visited so many countries much smaller with less knowledge and experience where they are so well satisfied with their daily life always made us wonder “why we in India cannot accomplish these simple amenities” ? Now we are becoming more consoled that India is moving forward in the right direction, and the people are going to get better comfort in their daily aspirations of life. Indians have been blessed with great deal of “tolerance” and “patience” and now we are going to reap the harvest slowly and steadily – “Thanks be to God”, and thanks to all our leaders for their foresight and their future vision.

  2. Another project to swindle tax Payers. There are two Sky- walks between Kannur-Adyar and BC Road. Neither one is used by Human accept by Pigeons and Crows along with Night Owls.
For example I took an hour to see how many People Cross over on the bridge near Mosque in Kannur-Adyar on Friday after the Namaz(Prayer) Service.
Surprise and Shocking result, not a single person used this Crossover bridge. With curiosity,I have questioned the few who were crossing the highway after Prayer. They answered with a laugh that they will follow Me if I climb those 30(almost 30 ft. high) steps at middle of the day. Even the weeds and grass is growing at the end of steps on both side of bridge. Good part is advertisers are benefits of this bridge.
Now this bridge is given contract to the same Company called Nirmiti Kendra which remodeled Town Hall and did a screw up job remodelling Police Quarters in Shakthinagar. Tax payers are at mercy with this corruption.

  3. Hahahahaha. When did 1.57 crores become “whopping’? If I’m not mistaken, some of the so called ‘high-end’ apartments cost upwards of 1.25 – 1.5 crores depending on the sq. foot area. Hahahahahaha! Hiccup….. cough.. sneeze…sniff sniff… giggles.. 🙂 Darn! I can feel a WHOPPING hiccup, sneeze and giggle coming up………..Let me scoot before I ‘decorate’ my laptop. 😉

  4. Before building a sky-walk the corporation should build good footpaths, so that pedestrains can walk on the footpath than on the roads. Train passengers have the rouge auto drivers to transport them. For the people who use the train on a daily basis are mostly from the southern most state of our country. The district incharge should also see to the road from town hall to the railway station (Central) which is in a pathetic state for decades. The Member of Parliament has no idea about this road. Even proper signal near Hampankatta junction and erstwhile clock tower will solve all the problems and there is no need for a sky walk. The sky walk is a plan to swindle tax payers hard earned money.

  5. Joe D’Souza is 100% right in his observations on similar structures at Kannooru and BC Road (Thumbay to be precise). Our policy makers, elected officials and govt officials – they all have an unique talent of doing things wrong and wasting public money. Moreover, look at all the drama in the name of ‘foundation stone’ ceremony!!! Our politicians and their cronies exploit every chance to be photographed and loot public money. The city of mangalooru looks like a slum with no basic infrastructure and here they are building a ‘sky walk’!! May be, we will need sky walks all over the city to avoid crazy drivers and trash!!! LOL
