French priest killed by attackers ‘claiming allegiance to IS’

Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, France: French President Francois Hollande said two assailants who stormed a Normandy church and slit the throat of an elderly Catholic priest on Tuesday had claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.

The hostage drama in the Normandy town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray further stunned a nation already shaken to its core after a massacre in the French Riviera city of Nice less than two weeks ago, which was claimed by IS.

Hollande condemned the “cowardly murder of the parish priest by two terrorists claiming to be from Daesh”, using an Arabic term for the Islamic State group.

Hollande appealed for “unity” in France, where political blame trading has poisoned the aftermath of the truck attack, the third major strike in the country in 18 months.

“The threat remains very high,” said Hollande.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said the case was being handled by anti-terrorism prosecutors.

The two attackers stormed the church during morning mass, taking the five people inside hostage, including the priest, interior ministry spokesman Pierre Henry Brandet said.

He said the church was surrounded by France’s anti-gang brigade the BRI, which specialises in kidnappings, and that “the two assailants came out and were killed by police”.

The priest died after his throat was slit, sources close to the investigation told AFP. The archbishop of the nearby city of Rouen, Dominique Lebrun, named him as 84-year-old Jacques Hamel.

However the archbishopric’s website states he was born in 1930.

Three of the hostages were freed unharmed, and another was fighting for their life, said Brandet.

Pope Francis voiced his “pain and horror” at the “barbaric killing” of the priest.

France remains on high alert after Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel ploughed a truck into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice on July 14, killing 84 people and injuring over 300.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls expressed his horror at what he called “a barbaric attack on a church”.

“The whole of France and all Catholics are wounded. We will stand together,” he wrote on Twitter.

Lebrun urged all non-believers to join those of the church in “calling to God”.

“The Catholic Church can take up no other weapons than prayer and fraternity between men,” he said in a statement.

France has been a prime target of the Islamic State group, which regularly calls for supporters to launch attacks against the country.

France is involved in carrying out air strikes against the jihadists in Iraq and Syria.

Attacks in Belgium in March, and in Germany this week, have also increased jitters across Europe.

After Nice, France extended a state of emergency giving police extra powers to carry out searches and place people under house arrest for another six months until January.

It was the fourth time the security measures have been extended since IS jihadists struck Paris in November, killing 130 people in a wave of bombings and shootings at restaurants, a concert hall and the national stadium.

Valls had warned earlier this week that the country will face more attacks as it struggles to handle extremists returning from jihad in the Middle East and those radicalised at home by devouring propaganda on the internet.

France has been concerned about the threat against churches ever since Sid Ahmed Ghlam, a 24-year-old Algerian IT student, was arrested in Paris in April last year on suspicion of killing a woman who was found shot dead in the passenger seat of her car, and of planning an attack on a church.

Prosecutors say they found documents about Al-Qaeda and IS at his home, and that he had been in touch with a suspected jihadist in Syria about an attack on a church.

As part of beefed up security operations in France, some 700 schools and Jewish synagogues and 1,000 mosques are under military protection.

However with some 45,000 Catholic churches, and thousands more Protestant and evangelical churches, protecting all places of worship is a massive headache for security services.

The Nice massacre triggered a bitter political spat over alleged security failings, with the government accused of not doing enough to protect the population.

French far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen wrote on Twitter that the “modus operandi obviously makes us fear a new attack from terrorist Islamists.”

  1. It makes me sick to my stomach to read about the final moments of this Catholic priest. This grandfatherly figure was forced to kneel down and beheaded inside this 16th century Church!!!!How can anybody do such a horrific thing to elderly person who was praying? SAVAGES!!! Apparently these animals also performed some kind of religious ritual in arabic before slaughtering priest and photographed the entire thing!!! What a disgusting creatures!!!

This is no different from hacking Hindu priests in Bangladesh. However, shameless secular groups and media try to avoid any open and honest discussion on the ideology behind these evil forces. They would rather attack RSS and BJP over silly incidents. Very troubling!!

  2. If you want to understand the sad state of ‘moderate’ muslims, watch this debate hosted by Arnab Goswamy. See how this unknown character from Bollywood is scared to say a word critical of his religion!!! He dodges almost every question!! Mullahs and religious scholars are even more embarrassing!! How can this group ever accept and embrace modernity? Very troubling!!!

  3. There is a very urgent need for these Muslim radicals to stop the attacking, killing and raping pf their local population. All this nonsense MUST stop, and it should STOP NOW, or else innocent people will end up dying.

  4. Oh yes! you are absolutely right Mr O R Pai, media should not discuss SILLY incidents of RSS and BJP, like some years ago of one Graham Stanes along with his two kids. The institutions and actions belonging to the majority are always right. Might is always right.

Thanks for your daily words of wisdom.

  5. Look how quickly Aruna from ‘Beef Club’ came forward to attack Hindu community in India. He goes all the way back to an incident from 1999. If you give him ten more minutes, he would bring up Nathooram Godse to Emperor Ashoka!!! His hatred towards Hindu community is not at all a surprise. The same Aruna and Beef Club won’t even say word on National Liberation Front of Tripura or Naga Nationalist group from Nagaland. Does he know the violence, murder and forced conversion by these groups in the name of a specific religion?

Well, in a way, Aruna is simply repeating what his foreign masters have taught for generations!! Hypocrisy is their language. It’s always one rule for them and another rule for others. Not at all surprising.

  6. Mr O R Pai/ Bhat, why are you using my so called Masters language before accusing me of hypocrisy. What is your master’s language ?

  7. Aruna from ‘Beef Club’ tries to change subject from religious terrorism to language. Well, we are using a non-Indian language because it was forced upon India by foreigners for almost 150 years. They didn’t ask us if we wanted to use the language or not. Read history and stop embarrassing yourself. This is an english portal and it’s quite obvious that people are posting in English, not in kannada or Tulu.

  8. Mr O R Pai, you have accused me of having foreign masters though we are sons of the same soil. You have reasoned that the usage of a foreign language English cannot be construted as serving foreign masters. So what is it that makes ME a slave and NOT YOU. You have made a serious allegation and it is your moral responsibility to justify.

PS: I read many posts in kannada on this very portal, maybe you are not aware or ignorant about its usage like me. I hope some reader giudes us both on its usage.

  9. “what is that makes ME a slave…” asks Aruna from ‘Beef Club’

    Dear friend,
The answer is very simple. It’s your condescending nature and pure disrespect towards Hindus in every turn and action. This is the self-hating nature taught by foreign masters to native people all over the world. For example, see how you reacted to my comments on on-going incidents of terrorism. I was talking about non-stop bloodshed and killing by members of a specific community clearly quoting a specific ideology. People like you and many others have no honesty or courage to admit this truth and say it in public. Instead, you guys immediately try to change the topic by bringing up some old acts of violence committed by Hindus. If you want to play this game, we all can go back to a timeline starting from fall of Roman empire to end of second world war and see which religion created mayhem all over the world, right?

Look – I’m not here to defend any religion as I find all religions to be based on fear and superstition. They are all using the concept of ‘god’ to fool, manipulate and control public. At the same time, I also know that all religions are not equally bad. I’m not going to remain silent when a religious group is unfairly targeted by religious bigots like you. Hope this makes it clear.

  10. Mr O R Pai, thanks for calling me your friend. By repeating terms like foreign masters, self haters, pseudo-seculars etc you are only exposing your indoctrination by the RSS. The RSS believes and preaches that, Muslim and christian religions are foreign hence their followers are slaves of foreign masters. This is why I broached the topic of foreign language where you have no problems. But religion is foreign. Reminds me of Zakir Naik.

  11. Aruna ,
Why are you misrepresenting my views? I have already answered your question on foreign language and I guess you are not smart enough to understand it. Please don’t compare me with Z.Naik In fact, he is much more closer to your foreign masters than me. He lectures everyone about true god vs false gods. Sounds familiar?

  12. When the history of false flag terrorism will be written, the Charlie Hebdu attack will get a prominent position as it is a trendsetter for future terrorist attacks in the west. Its timing was perfect as prior to the attack, France had voted in favor of Palestine in United Nations and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed to grant asylum to about 800,000 refugees from Syria and other war-affected regions. The attack ended the sympathies of European citizens for migrants. Needless to say that the winner was German anti-refugee, Neo-Nazi, racist Pediga who gained unimaginable strength from the French attack.

Is it a coincidence that since the Charlie Hebdu massacre in January 2015, almost every terrorism incident has followed the same pattern? The perpetrator is always killed and usually on the spot. The alleged terrorist Bouhlel has also been killed by the police. So no one is there to stand a trial or answer sensational questions. Once again his identity papers are found nearby like the Syrian passport found in Paris attacks (remember Saudi pilot’s passport found in World trade center rubble after 9/11.)

While French authorities haven’t discovered any link, ISIS has accepted the responsibility through Amaq News agency disseminated once again by SITE Intelligence (Search for International Terrorism Elite) –ran by renowned terrorism analyst Rita Katz. Katz publicly claims to find ISIS released videos before anyone else since the death cult began beheading western journalists in 2014. However, this time, the claim has been mocked by French people using a Twitter hashtag #DaeshRevendique, or #ISISClaims. Everything from losing the Euro 2016 final to climate change and from Donald Trump accepting the presidential nomination to Brexit has jokingly been attributed to the terrorist group under the hashtag #ISISclaims. Interestingly, later SITE removed the alleged ISIS claim regarding Nice attack from its web-site.
Shortly after Charlie Hebdu Massacre, Limouge’s Deputy Police Commissioner Herlic Fredou, who was investigating the background of the accused Kouachi brothers, was found dead in his office mysteriously.

Questions have also been raised about the absence of any blood stains on the road in the footage recorded in the aftermath of the carnage which killed 84 people and injured more than 200 -at least 25 of which are in critical condition on life-saving machines. Consider, this large collection of photos by Daily Mail. Interestingly the official death toll has not been changed since despite the official narrative that 25 injured people are on life-saving machines.

Whatever be the motives, they are simply pushing France towards a Frexit.
An objective analysis is needed keeping in mind the touchstone who is benefiting from all this gruesome spate of blood? These incidents are certainly serving anti-refugee political powers in Europe to ban the influx of refugees caused by NATO adventure in the Middle East? They may also provide an excuse to prolong military operations as French Government is pledging to increase resources to the bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria since the recent attack. This may also be a pretext to extend emergencies and enforce martial law. Whatever be the motives, they are simply pushing France towards a Frexit.

Why is there no focus on the rising crime rates in the world especially in Western countries despite their huge law enforcing machinery and generally good economic conditions? Does it not point to the inefficiency of their law system and the prevalence of social conditions leading to crimes?
Why is there focus only on certain kinds of violence and not on others, which are much more lethal in effect?
How come, the powerful nations of the world keep invading countries and sponsoring civil wars leading to millions of deaths and not attracting any punishment?
Why is there no debate on the Western role in the genesis of Terrorism and the focus remains on Islam’s or Muslims’ role? Terrorism is an illegitimate response to illegitimate wars and the machinations of West in the Muslim World. For one illegitimate response to end, the other illegitimate is to be put to an end. This is true for India as well where much larger terrorism caused by Rightist and Leftist Hindus is ignored and Muslim Terrorism is discussed day and night?
Why is there always a debate on Jihad in Islam and not on military ideologies and methods of Western countries? The military ideologies of other religions too including Christianity and Hinduism advocate much greater militarization than Islam.
If democracy is important, how come this is not applicable to United Nations where 5 Big Powers have the right to veto any resolution even if it has the support of an overwhelming majority of nations?

    Jai Hind

  13. In the eyes of Some, all terrorist attacks are false flag operations!! They refuse to admit that Pakistan is our enemy nation. Ask them about Zakir Naik or kashmir terrorists and watch them play taqiyya tricks! Then again, it’s not their fault alone. Certain institutions (hint – media, political parties) have totally failed to do their job and protect true secular values. They were given a free pass for too long to engage in bad behavior by these media outlets and political parties.
