Girijamma Urala murder accused gets life imprisonment

Kundapur: The Kundapur additional sessions judge sentenced the accused to life imprisonment in the Girijamma Urala (85) Manoor murder case on July 20.

Praveen Acharya (24) resident of Kumbashi was sentenced by the additional session judge to life imprisonment for murdering Girijamma Urala (85) on August 20, 2014. Another accused Nithin Acharya (24) was acquitted in the absence of proper evidence and the third accused Sanketh Gudigar (17) from Kumbashi was acquitted in the Juvenile justice court.

It is recalled that Girijamma, wife of Radhakrishna Urala, a resident near Mahalingeshwara Temple, Manoor was found murdered on August 20, Wednesday night. But the murder came to light on next day.

The prime accused Nithin, who noticed Girijamma all alone in the house, plotted to rob her with the help of his friends Sanketh and Praveen. As per Nithin’s direction, Praveen removed the tiles of the roof and entered the house, opened the main door to let Sanketh inside the house.

At that time, Girijamma woke up, on seeing them she began to scream. The accused, who were scared of being caught, forced a piece of cloth in her mouth and covered her face. After looting the gold from her, they strangled Girijamma to death. Nithin was directing them from outside the house. The incident came to light when the neighbour came to give her milk in the morning.

The accused had then pledged the stolen gold in S K Goldsmith in Koteshwar and at Kundapur’s Manappuram Gold. However, the police recovered the stolen gold weighing 31 grams and worth Rs 78,000 from both the places.

The Brahmavar CPI Arun Kumar Naik submitted the charge sheet to the court. After three years of enquiry, the court on Thursday passed the judgment.
