Golden era of film music gone: Khayyam

Mumbai, Sep 1 (IANS) Legendary music composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam, better known as Khayyam, believes that the golden era of Indian film music is long gone.

“The time Indian film music reached a supreme position, that era is missing today,” Khayyam said at a press conference here.

The composer, who has delivered timeless hits such as “Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein”, “In aankhon ki masti”, “Dikhai diye yun”, also said that today’s music directors should not be blamed for it.

“They are talented. They can’t be held responsible for that,” he added, before explaining that during earlier days, music was made according to the subject and keeping in mind the role of the actor or director.

“This requirement is no longer expected nowadays. So the entire approach has changed and I don’t blame anybody,” he said.

Khayyam also expressed his thoughts about the way filmmaking has changed in Bollywood nowadays.

“In our time, we made a film with the expectation that it would celebrate a silver jubilee and a golden jubilee. But now a film hardly stays at theatre for one or two weeks and in this short span a film crosses 100 crore,” he said.

But he is happy about the kind of profit Bollywood films are making now.

Khayyam has now joined hands with singer Sonu Nigam for an upcoming film called “Gulam Bandhu”. He recorded a song with Sonu here.
