India launches heaviest commercial space mission ever

Sriharikota (AP) (PTI): Heralding a new era, India tonight launched its heaviest commercial space mission ever with its polar rocket successfully putting five British satellites into the intended orbit after a flawless takeoff.

Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) workhorse 44.4 metre tall Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C28–a PSLV-XL version–hurtled towards the night skies with a rich orange flame at its tail and a plume of white fume and placed the five satellites in sun synchronous orbit about 20 minutes after lift off at 9.58 PM from the Satish Dhawan space Centre here.

“It’s been a wonderful mission. We have had an extremely successful mission,” a beaming ISRO Chairman Kiran Kumar said from the Mission Control Centre amidst resounding cheers from the assembled scientists. The life of the mission is seven years.

With the overall mass of five satellites being about 1,440 kg, this launch becomes the “heaviest commercial mission” ever undertaken by ISRO and its commercial arm Antrix Corporation.

PSLV’s 30th mission saw the launch of three identical DMC3 optical earth observation satellites, built by Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), United Kingdom, and two auxiliary satellites.

The three DMC3 satellites, each weighing 447 kg, was launched into a Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO) using the high-end version of PSLV-XL.

Earlier successful launches by ISRO — Mars Orbiter Mission which was launched in Nov 5, 2013 and Chandrayaan-1 launched in Oct 22, 2008 were with similar PSLV-XL variants.

In addition to the three DMC3 satellites, PSLV C28 also carries two auxiliary satellites from UK – CBNT-1,a technology demonstrator earth observation micro satellite built by SSTL, and De-OrbitSail, a technology demonstrator nano satellite built by Surrey Space Centre.

The satellites were launched as part of an arrangement to between DMC International Imaging (DMCii), a wholly owned subsidiary of SSTL, UK and Antrix Corporation Limited.

The DMC3 constellation, comprising three advanced mini satellites DMC3-1, DMC3-2 and DMC3-3, is designed to address the need for simultaneous high spatial resolution and high temporal resolution optical Earth Observation.

These satellites can image any target on the Earth’s surface every day. Major application areas include surveying the resources on earth and its environment, managing urban infrastructure and monitoring disasters.

    • Original Duplicate is busy stealing the limelight from others.

Whenever something great is achieved by somebody else some where, he shares the credit for it for Modi or RSS! If armed forces do some creditworthy things, he praises the Army, Doddanna, Israel and the RSS together! If ISRO achieves great things he GRABS A SHARE OF IT FOR “OUR LEADERSHIP” ie MODI!?

MODI AND RSS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THESE ACHIEVEMENTS!

RSS AND MODI CAN ONLY CLAIM THE CREDIT FOR “NOT DISMANTLING THE ISRO, DEPARTMENT OF ATOMIC RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, ETC, ETC; FOR THEY WERE VOCIFEROUS OPPONENTS OF ALL THESE PROGRAMMES, OPPOSING SPENDING ON THEM BY THE “DAY-DREAMER AND MEGALOMANIAC NEHRU”, AS REPEATEDLY AND INSULTINGLY DESCRIBED BY RSS, VAJPAYEE AND ADVANI..

      • Dear BN Paimaam,
It’s sad to see how partisan hatred has done so much damage to your ability to think and see the reality. I never referred to BJP and current leadership. I was congratulating both ISRO and the leadership they have. This includes both current and previous folks who were involved in taking our country forward. Yes – this certainly involves UPA govt as well. You owe me an apology for misrepresenting my views even though I had absolutely no reference to any political party or individual.

        • Dear Duplicate Paimaam, do you work as an ISRO Employee in the USA?

For, initially, you have claimed in your reply that by “EVERY bharatheeya should be proud of ISRO and OUR leadership”. Then, in response to my post and to wriggle out from your RSS claim on rocket launching, you said “I was congratulating ISRO and the LEADERSHIP THAT THEY HAVE” and not Modi.

YOU CAN NOT JUSTIFY “OUR LEADERSHIP” TO MEAN ISRO’S LEADERSHIP, UNLESS YOU PROVE THAT YOU ARE AN EMPLOYEE OF ISRO.

SIR, YOU URGENTLY REQUIRE TREATMENT FOR “FOOT-IN-MOUTH” DISEASE.

HOWEVER, IF AN UNNECESSARY APOLOGY CLAIMED BY YOU FROM ME COULD HELP YOU GET CURED, I WOULD BE DOING SO FOR YOU, HAPPILY.

          • I don’t mind educating political illiterates even if it takes multiple iterations. In fact, being a much smarter person on many of these topics, I consider it to be my duty to educate some of these individuals on this forum!! Smiles…

Pincode Pai has entangled himself into an awkward pretzel of ignorance and political hatred. I have been consistent in my message. I was referring to ‘bharateeya’ and ‘our leadership’. In other words, I was referring to the Bharateeya political leadership that has funded and supported ISRO in achieving these marvelous things over years. !! Later, I further clarified with my reference to UPA. Still, Pincode Pai doesn’t know the difference between leadership and management!! LOL
