J&K government recommends examiner’s retirement after student’s suicide

Srinagar, Nov 24 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday recommended compulsory retirement of an examiner on the charge of casual evaluation of a physics paper of a student, after which the latter committed suicide.

Minister for Technical Education Imran Raza Ansari recommended the compulsory retirement of Mushtaq Ahmad Tiploo, a senior lecturer, who evaluated the physics paper of Adnan Hilal of Kashmir Government Polytechnic and declared him ‘failed’.

Frustrated over his unexpected failure, Adnan committed suicide.

However, on re-evaluation by subject matter experts, Adnan was declared ‘successful’ as he scored 50 out of 100 marks.

The bereaved family and other students launched an agitation to seek punishment for the examiner.

“The lecturer has been declared as ‘deadwood’ and his compulsory retirement recommended. This is in addition to criminal action being initiated against the examiner concerned,” the minister said.

The minister directed his department to take action against the officers of the State Board of Technical Education (SBOTE) for alleged negligence in duty in the case.
