JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar moves HC for bail

New Delhi : JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, arrested in a sedition case, today moved the Delhi High Court seeking bail.

Kanhaiya’s lawyers Sushil Bajaj and Vrinda Grover, who were escorted by Delhi Police, directly went to the high court’s listing Registrar Loren Bamniyal and mentioned the petition behind closed doors.

The lawyers came to the high court following today’s direction of the Supreme Court, which transferred the bail petition to the HC and also asked the Centre and Delhi Police to ensure proper security arrangements for counsel of the students’ union leader at the high court premises.

Soon after the apex court order, security in and around the high court was beefed up with the deployment of additional police personnel and CRPF jawans.

The matter is yet to be listed before a bench of the high court for hearing. Kanhaiya, who is in judicial custody, had yesterday approached the apex court directly, seeking bail on the ground that his life was under threat in Tihar Jail.

His plea was taken up earlier in the day by the Supreme Court which declined to entertain it saying if it does, it will become a precedent available to all the accused in the country.

Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on February 12 on sedition charge following a controversial event at JNU campus where anti-India slogans were allegedly raised.

The student leader was produced in the court on Wednesday after the end of his police custody, where a group of men dressed in lawyers’ robes unleashed a brazen attack on him and others, including journalists present there.

Kanhaiya had sough the apex court’s intervention, saying no purpose would be served by keeping him in the jail and the police was finding it difficult to even produce him in the court.

Meanwhile, High Court Bar Association President Rajiv Khosla condemned the violence in the Patiala House court complex and urged lawyers to maintain peace and not do anything which would lead to such untoward incidents.

  1. He should be tried at district court first. I do not think he deserves any special media news. It is quite obvious his intentions are to destroy and degrade India; glorify terrorist in the name of freedom of speech. Arnab’s debate about this issue is excellent. Whatever may be the issue, that does not mean he needs to support Pakistan and glorify Afzal. He has hurt our soldiers, flag, parliament….. for some political gain.

    • Sir, the RSS and the BJP had joined hands with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehboobaa Mufti and formed the government in Kashmir, AFTER both of them had declared that Afzal Guru is their hero and his dead body should be handed over to Kashmir to construct a grand monument to him.

Now, RSS leader and BJP man deputed by Modi, Ram Madhav, is begging Mehaboobaa Mufti to join hand with them to form government there again, consequent to the death of the Mufti!

The ISIS flag and the Pakistan flag were frequently unfurled in Kashmir when the BJP – PDP government was ruling Kashmir till recently.

Your prescription and advice are not applicable to RSS. Why don’t you object such traitorous acts and omissions by the RSS? Where is Arnab Goswami, while all these things happen in blatant violation of the law of the land. Do we have two sets of law, one for the RSS supporters, and the other to the opposers of RSS?

Afterall, Arnab Goswami is a BJP man and his entire family is in the RSS and the BJP. We know why he is politicising the matter.

      • “After all, Arnab Goswami is a BJP man and his entire family is in the RSS and the BJP. We know why he is politizing the matter,” by B.N. Pai, the Eminent Advocate from Kumbla.

Your allegations have no legs to stand upon. I regularly watch Arnab Goswami’s panel discussions most evenings, if I am at home and I feel he calls, “A spade a spade.” There are other good anchors like Anand Narasimhan and Bhupendra Choubey. Most of the anchors on many channels are not bold to grill the ministers, politicians and other celebrities. They just get cowed down and many are in the pockets of politicians or corporates. One channel is subservient to your favourite Indian National Congress and, one year, they gave the “INDIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD,” to Sonia Gandhi, whom you treat as as iconic figure. What have you to say?

What if I were to say that you are the admirer of the Dynasty, whom you hold in high esteem and would not believe in committing any faults?

My dear friend, politicians are politiciansd and all of the have their personal agendas. They are just there to fool the people and line their pockets.
