Kishan Bangera- the ‘Guru’ of Mangalore Bicycle Club makes History

Mangaluru: Senior member and cycling stalwart Kishan Bangera of Mangalore Bicycle Club (MBC), has added one more feather to his cap – on May 18, 2017, he clocked 10,000 kms in 138 days of continuous pedalling in this calendar year. He is one cyclist not only MBC but entire Mangaluru, who everyone looks up to for inspiration and guidance and is affectionately called as “Guru” by many cyclists in all its sense.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” had said Albert Einstein- and this cyclist has a great passion for cycling that he has enjoyed this hobby by pedalling for fun and glory, and this sport has kept him moving in his life. Not only cycling has kept Kishan healthy, it has also brought him name and fame. Bravo to a big achiever! Bangera’s passion for sports is nothing new- at the age of 17 he got into Body Building and when he was 18 years he became the university champion. He was a gold medalist at the inter-university level and also bagged the titles Karnataka Uday, Karnataka Kishore, Bharath Uday, Bharath Kishore, Bharath Kumar, Karnataka Kumar, Karnataka Shree, Bharath Shree and Bharath Shresht. He was selected to represent India in the ‘Mr World competition’ – Japan, however due to passport issues and financial constraints he couldn’t make it to the event. He joined railways in 1988 and currently is the Chief Ticket Inspector and Deputy Station Manager Commercial at Mangalore Central Railway Station.

He started his cycling journey around 4 years back for getting back to a fit and healthy lifestyle. His level of interest in cycling increased when he watched Tour de France in 2013 and has been pedalling since then, which resulted in a lot of change in his lifestyle and fitness after a break. Moreover, he has inspired many to take up cycling on a regular basis. When it comes to cycling for Kishan and his partner Dony Menezes, who is the current President of Mangalore Bicycle Club, they have always been encouraging themselves and cyclists around to be regular. Last one year saw a break and cycling took a back seat due to his hectic work schedules and health issues of a family member. But he couldn’t resist his temptation to restart his passion for long.

Thus beginning of this calendar year, he set off on his new mission of pedaling everyday despite whatever hurdles come his way. And on May 18, 2017, he successfully completed 10,000 kms milestone on his pedal, which is an average of 72 kms per day. He is the first one from MBC to qualify for MbC Ultra Distance Club 2017 and he completed the annual target of 10000 kms in just 5 months. His objective through this mission was to achieve overall fitness and discipline in his life. He always says “being regular on a bicycle is any day better and satisfying than being faster on it”. He has shed close to 14 kgs in those 138 days of cycling along with controlled healthy diet plan.

Besides his weight loss, Kishan has gained a total synchronisation of his personal, work and fitness space through this disciplined approach and dedication. For the month of May 2017, he was ranked No.1 in India for Gran Fondo challenge and ranked No.3 in India on distance challenge launched by STRAVA. When all the members of MBC congratulated him on this great feat, he said, this is just the beginning and he is aiming at cycling all 365 days of this calendar year thereby creating a record. We are sure there is no more justification required as to why people from the cycling fraternity refer him as “Guru”. For all his achievements, he is grateful to his wife Sushma Kishan who is also a fitness freak and his son Ansh Bangera for their continuous support in achieving his fitness goals.

Kishan has been a great asset for Mangalore Bicycle Club and he will remain to be. Hence, MBC has decided to launch their next big initiative ‘Guru-Shishya Training Program’ based on the success story of Kishan Bangera- and he has agreed to adopt a specific number of disciples and train them for a period of 30 to 45 days starting July 2017. This training will encompass cross training and overall fitness of the person including his diet plan, sleeping pattern and not just physical fitness. For sure this will instil dedication, discipline and regularity for anyone being part of this program. More information on this program will be rolled out shortly.

  2. Kishan is indeed Guru of cyclists in Mangalore. His passion for cycling and dedication is commendable. He is very jovial and energetic. Recently even after riding 350kms in one day he was very fresh and energetic. Sometimes you wonder how he can do this on his mountain bike. He gives valuable tips about cycling and fitness whenever someone asks him. He has corrected my cycling style and posture for injury-free riding. Every morning he rides for nearly three hours. He is very active in club activities. Its a pleasure to ride with him. I wish him all the best.

  6. I’ve been doing gym bike (1 hr at different resistance levels) & treadmill (almost 30 minutes with incremental speed starting with 3 mph ending with 7 mph) everyday for the past 3 years and I must stay that it has helped me a lot. Apart from that I go for swimming, diving @ 8 ft end of the pool & back stroke. My kids too swim just like me & this has helped them in their studies. Also we follow a healthy diet plan which is less spicy like biriyani which is less spicy & shawarma made at home from grilled chicken & other ingredients. Also we eat a lot of fruits & vegetables & drink warm water throughout the day.

  7. Good article featuring Mr.Bangera. Our society needs more and more inspiring people like this man. I wish our youth could spend more time in body building, sports and activities helping society than engaging in useless activities.

  10. It’s been about 3 decades that I know Kishan, right from his body building days. Time has flown by. But, not much has changed in him. He still looks, talks and acts like the guy I knew 30 years ago. He’s very well known for his wit, grit and determination. If I ever noticed anything different is that his wit has slightly faded away. Rest is still the same. He always believed in achieving milestones in a clinical way. There’s no rush or urgency in his approach towards reaching his goals. Yet, he reached these milestones effortlessly. It indeed is a pleasure to see him grow to be a role model for many young and old people in Mangalore and elsewhere. I really feel proud to say that I’m one of his good old buddies from yester years. Keep doing what you’re doing Kishan and make a difference in your and other peoples life. Guru word suits you well.
    Best
