Kundapur: School-girl Risks Life, Saves Sibling from Drowning in River Sauparnika

Kundapur: A tenth-standard student of Kollur Shri Mookambika High School showed extraordinary courage and did an exemplary act of jumping into a river in full spate and rescued her younger sister from drowning earlier this week.

In view of very heavy rains, a holiday had been declared to school on July 20. Since Jyoti and her younger sister Mamata Marathi were not aware of it, they left home for classes in the morning. But on the way, they got the information about the holiday.

They turned back towards home. While walking back, at Salageri of Kollur, Mamata accidentally slipped and fell into the river. Jyoti too jumped to save her. Both got carried away over quite a distance. Jyoti did not give up but kept on staying afloat with her sister and both finally managed to reach the river bank safely.

Both sustained bruises on their cheeks, hands and limbs. They have recovered from the trauma. The school authorities and villagers have commended her brave act.
