Make in India and hate in India cannot go together: Tharoor

Boston: Taking a jibe at the Modi government, former minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said policies like ‘Make in India’ and hatred cannot go together as he asserted that “outrageous” statements against minorities by ruling party members only undermine the country’s soft power.

To attract foreign direct investment, which is key to the construction and modernisation of the infrastructure sector and manufacturing, the Congress MP stressed on the need to maintain the pluralistic character of the country.

Before India tries to leverage its soft power to increase its standing in the world, Tharoor said first there is need to fix the problem at the domestic front.

“For us to be credible as a nation that enjoys and wields soft power, we have to fix our domestic problems first. The truth is that we have to do enough to keep our people, healthy, well and secure not just from jihadi terrorism. Progress is being made but not enough to reach everyone,” Tharoor said in his keynote address to the Harvard University’s annual Indian convention 2016.

“If on one hand, we go around saying Make in India, Startup India and Digital India and want to attract foreign investors, we can’t do so if we are condoning hatred in India at the same time,” Tharoor said in reference to the flagship schemes launched by the Narendra Modi-led government.

“It is not good when people in the ruling party make outrageous statements against minorities. These are not good because they undermine the soft power of India,” Tharoor told the students in the packed Harvard Business School auditorium.

Tharoor asserted that in order to maintain India’s soft power, the larger idea of India needs to be sustained.

“An India that celebrates the common space of every identity, it would be a secure to be a Muslim, secure to be a kayastha… whatever you define yourself. Because all of those identities are made secure under the Indian identity,” he said.

Tharoor said if India wants to remain a source of attraction for the world, it must preserve the “precious pluralism like a civilizational asset”

“It is not so good when women are assaulted on the streets of Delhi. It is not good when some people begin to fear that it is safer to be a cow than to be a Muslim in India today,” Tharoor said.

He also told the Indian students that one of his investor friends decided against investing in India because of acts of intolerance in the country.

Responding to a question, Tharoor said the Congress party has a “deep bench of talent”. “Political parties live by electoral success. We have taken quite a beating in the last couple of years. Fortunes always change in politics. It (Congress) is certainly not as has been caricatured as the most corrupt party of India,” he said.

The Congress party happened to be in power when a number of corruption scandals took place, Tharoor said.

“Whoever had been in power would have been tarnished in the same way that happened to us,” he said.

What more can we expect from person of dubious character who himself under a big doubt of involved in murdering his wife

    • Mr. Tony D’Souza,

Let us wait for the judicial conclusions. If he is involved in the death of his wife, then he will face the music, otherwise not. We just cannot jump into conclusions. However, from what I read in the media over a period of time, I can say that the Delhi Police have been negligent and have done a shoddy job and I wonder what will be the outcome of the job. You have to appreciate that the police are subservient to their political masters, irrespective of whether the latter are right or wrong or their careers may end up in rocks: no medals, no promotions, punishment or non-executive postings.

Though, I am not a lover of Indian politicians, most of whom I consider as highly corrupt and/or uncouth and/or uneducated and I can accuse them of many other things, Shashi Tharoor is a class by himself. His English and knowledge of the world is par excellence and much, much higher than an average than a typical neta. Though, he is a Keralite, he speaks Hindi quite well.

One has to realize that before entering politics, he spent most of his career in the United Nations at its headquarters and these people are far, far superior to a typical neta in all aspects.

He should have had a senior position in Congress Party. However, like many political parties in India, Congress Party is a family or private limited concern and one has to be a flunkey to come up. I am not speaking about corruption in Congress Party, but inferring to other things in general. Otherwise, I will be disenchanting one of the chamchas, who, displays his adoration by trying to counter critical comments on the Dynasty and Congress. Though I have an anglized name and a live-and-let-live attitude to life, I have been accused of being a RSS and BJP stooge and sympathizer. This accusation of his can be categorized as highly stupid or a figment of his imagination and he resorts to when cornered and has no way out or quit the force.

  2. The “make in India” slogan is the funny motto of the 21st century; but the production has not yet started. How the foreign capital will land by the trillions of dollars in a country with chronic notoriety in red tape-corruption-labor disorder-dilapidated infrastructure, now added with another politically invented spirit of intolerance targeted towards the minorities and Dalits. The most cordial invitation to invest 100% in Railway-oil and gas and infrastructure will be turned as a joke for the invertors; if they are dissatisfied by the return of their investment, can they take the investment back?

There was a news that the CM of Haryana will allow the foreigners to eat beef, but he declared that the foreigners will not be allowed to eat beef but only dal and chappathi; thus keeping his affirmative declaration that if anybody wanted to live in India, don’t eat beef. India, is it his father’s own property? Mr. Modi, who is going around the world in delivering the gospel of “make in India” won’t say a word crisscrossing the totally reckless and irrational statements of his political comrades; thus the electorate of India are treated like a bunch of donkeys. He and the CM of Haryana are greatly and eagerly interested to have massive inflow of investment in Haryana, to the land of pure vegetarianism.

  3. Tony D’souza – “The guy is acting holier then the priest as if nothing was happening in UPA term”

Sir, you stand a very good chance of becoming a Minister in modi’s cabinet. For Love Jihadis like Shahnawaz Hussain and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi have become BJP Ministers for having condemned the Congress.

  4. Look who is talking, Mr. Shashi Taroor if you cannot utter good about the Ruling Govt. Dont talk rubbish also. What P.M Modi has done or going to do. You cannot even think of. You had your chance for 60 years and you did nothing expect for making scam over scam. Now please sit and enjoy the money you have done. and live the ruling party to do what they want.
