Malaysia to continue facilitating peace process in Philippines

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 13 (IANS) Malaysia remains committed to facilitating the peace process in southern Philippines, Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Saturday.

The Philippines government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) announced the launching of implementing phases of the peace agreements at the beginning of a two-day meeting in Malaysia, the first under new Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte.

The two parties signed a historical Comprehensive Agreement in 2014 with facilitation by Malaysia, aiming to end decades of conflict in the restive south.

“Malaysia will remain committed to the process for as long as is desired,” Najib said in a statement, promising to provide all possible assistance if requested by Manila.

“While certainly there are challenges ahead, I am confident that under President Duterte’s leadership, and with Malaysia steadfast in its role as an honest broker, a new era of development and prosperity in southern Philippines can be achieved,” he added.

Ab Ghafar Mohamed, the Malaysian facilitator of the peace process, told a press conference during the meeting that his country will continue to provide support in the implementing phases, including the decommissioning of MILF forces.
