Man Killed by Mob Near Delhi Over Beef Rumours

DADRI, UTTAR PRADESH: A 50-year-old man was beaten to death by a mob near Delhi on Monday night, allegedly over rumours that his family had eaten beef.

Mohammad Akhlaq and his son, 22, were dragged out by villagers in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, around 45 km from the capital, and beaten with bricks. Akhlaq died before he could be taken to hospital, and his son is critical.

Before assaulting the father and son, the villagers broke into the house, wrecked everything and even attacked the women.

“My husband was bleeding. His head was smashed. They beat the family…my husband had no enemies…,” said Akhlaq’s wife.

The men were still being beaten when the police arrived. Six men were arrested from the spot.

Akhlaq’s daughter said they only had mutton in their fridge. The police say they have taken the meat and sent it for forensic testing.

The family had lived in the village for over three decades.

The police are investigating how the beef rumours started.

“We found out that the people beat them because they consumed cow meat. More people will be arrested,” said S Kiran, a senior police officer.

News of the arrests led to tension in the area as villagers clashed with the police, forcing them to fire in the air. Villagers have claimed that a boy was injured in the firing.

As various accounts swirled on social media, the district administration warned against trouble-makers. “If a digital war against communal harmony is initiated then the guilty will be punished. But our first concern is to stop any such thing and we are working on it,” said NP Singh, the district magistrate.

  1. Height of illiteracy and divide and rule society… some govt will benefit from this ?? why these guys will not stop beef export ?? only indians can’t eat indian beef ??!!! shame on you guys…

    NEW DELHI: It was a systematic communal campaign in Dadri, that precedes acts of violence always. First a calf was reported missing, and a campaign unleashed that basically spread rumours linking the calf to eating beef. When the tension reached prescribed levels, a temple in Dadri announced that a particular family— Muslims of course— was eating, after keeping, beef in their home. And barely before the echo of the announcement had subsided, a mob attacked the house of Mohammad Akhlaq, in the village in Dadri, pulled him out and beat him to death with bricks. His 22 year old son was also attacked, and is presently battling for his life in a hospital. The mob attacked their grandmother, and tried to molest the women in the house. The family is completely traumatised, terrified and currently praying for the young son’s life.

    In terms of numbers, always very important for a statistic obsessed government, only one man has died so far. But in terms of impact, the incident has rung alarm bells across the country being reported in the global media at some length. And as the Muzaffarnagar violence at the time of the last Lok Sabha elections had shown, corroborated by subsequent communal incidents, the new strategy of those seeking to divide India on communal lines is to minimise deaths, but to exaggerate impact. Be it in the form of large scale displacement of the minorities, or widespread fear.

    In the Dadri attack the intention was not displacement, but to generate fear, to terrify. Hence the singling out of the one family, and the brutal attack where Akhlaq was killed without mercy. Do not eat beef is the ostensible message. The real message is: you are second class citizens, so you will do what you are told in India.

    So what are Muslims being told in India? But before that the stereotype which is fed by an ignorant, complicit media; goes largely unchallenged by the so called regional parties as they neither have the cadres nor the organisation to do little more than listen; and that is slowly being injected as a poisonous venom into society at every available opportunity, borrowing also from the US led campaign against Muslims across the world.

    1. Muslims in India are a monolith and hence dangerous;

    2. At best they are of two types: the APJ Abdul Kalam variety or the Dawood Ibrahim kind. And the second are in the majority, hence have to be hunted out before they hurt others;

    3. They are influenced greatly by the extremist politics of the terror groups in Pakistan and West Asia;

    4. They are growing rapidly and pose a challenge to the stability of India;

    5. They work against the cultural ethos of India, as they eat beef, take away our daughters, are aggressive in following their religion, and hence a threat to Hinduism;

    In this discourse there is no room for the reality. That Muslims are not a monolith, and are as culturally different as all other Indians; that they are largely liberal, even if they are religious as are non-Muslims in India; that they have shunned extremist politics to a point where they vote always for the secular option and not for the kinds of Owaisi, or the Jamaat e Islami in elections; that they have done nothing, repeat nothing, to be branded anti-national; that they too do not eat beef, and are secular and Indian as the last Indian.

    And hence through the systematic, crafted, manipulated communal incidents come the many messages. Muslims are being told very deliberately, and through violence:

    1. Do not marry outside your religion. The entire ‘love jihad’ campaign launched in Uttar Pradesh in particular by the RSS affiliates was directed at invoking terror through deliberate attacks on Hindu-Muslim couples, and on the families of the Muslim young people so involved, making it clear that this will not be tolerated;

    2. Do not eat meat or beef. The central government itself passed an order against the export of beef. The Maharashtra government has gone many steps further. This should have been a message to all Indians, but through the campaign and now Akhlaq’s murder it has been demonstrated that the defaulters are Muslims. Hence Muslims must follow the food code or suffer the consequences, as posts on the social media by self-acknowledged Hindutva acolytes profess in language that is abusive and vitriolic.

    3. Do not live in cosmopolitan colonies, move into ghettos. Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi have managed to make this a rule with most of Gujarat covered, and other cities and states following. Muslims do not easily get rented accommodation in these cities, and are also not allowed to buy property easily by the residents associations.

    4. Do not become too successful economically. The communal violence has been increasingly targeting Muslim businessmen, with shops being specifically targeted.In fact the Congress government in Maharashtra also fed into this by unleashing a wave of terror against Muslim professionals, many of whom were arrested on suspicion of having “terror links.’ While some were released after months and years, there are many languishing in jail for crimes that local lawyers have described as concocted.

    5. And speak only when you are asked to, actually not at all. This is the message coming out of a major attack on Muslim writers, academics, intelligentsia on the social media where trolls describing themselves as bhakts of PM Narendra Modi, Hindutva acolytes and carrying profile pictures of angry gods literally abuse and threaten any one writing under a Muslim name, questioning their patriotism, their religion and their identity. In fact Muslims are repeatedly reminded when they share in democratic debate, that they should remember how other countries —Pakistan for instance—treats its minorities, and should thus follow a path of caution.

    The campaign is virulent and relentless. And political parties in states going to the polls in particular are now feeling this pressure and reacting to it in some cases. In UP, Mulayam Singh and the Samajwadi party became bystanders during, before and after the Muzaffarnagar violence, doing little to counter the campaign of divisiveness unleashed by the BJP and the affiliates at the time. In Bihar, Janata Dal(U) leaders have taken cognisance of what MP Pavan Varma described to this writer, as a virulent communal campaign by the RSS and the BJP to consolidate the majority vote, and are trying to combat it. As Varma said, “RSS cadres have fanned into the districts and are working systematically to create a divide.” He was optimistic, however, they would not succeed in Bihar as they had in UP, maintaining that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is alive to this and keeping a close watch.

  3. Now it is quite easy to kill people due to the beef ban law enacted with 10 years and 5 years prison term with Rs. 5000 and Rs. 10000 respectively in Haryana and Maharastra. Is there any country, especially any democratic country with such an insanity of prohibiting the food of citizen’s choice? How the President of India can sign a such a bill?

    Mr. Modi was really concerned with the religion-related terrorism in the Arab world. How to define this killing of an innocent person by a bunch of street hooligans? Is it heavenly-related event?

    Now under the rule of BJP, it is quite easy to kill anybody; put any kind of meat in somebody’s house and kill them, and the killers will be declared as holy servants of the most high.

    • Mr. A.S. Mathew,

      An hour ago, at a store in Goa, a motor-cyclist entered to buy something and he parked his vehicle outside containing vegetable, fruits, etc. Two cows came and wrenched open the bags tossing tomatoes and vegetables on the road and by the time the rider could retrieve his stuff the cows were happily munching the tomates. Had the cashier not raised an alarm, everything would have been lost.

      Are these cattles masterless or do they have owners? In that case, where is their responsibility other than just shouting hoarsely against cow-slaughter. They should be responsible for these cattles and their upkeeping.

      • Nelson is absolutely right when it comes to cows roaming the streets and those irresponsible owners!! It’s embarrassing to see cows, buffaloes, goats and pigs roaming openly in public and I never understood why city authorities turn a blind eye to this issues. In addition to causing traffic accidents, it also ruins the quality of urban landscape. Every animal freely roaming should be caught and kept in a holding area. The animals should be released only if the owner pays a hefty fine.

  4. This is beyond disgusting! There is absolutely no place for these acts in a democracy. Every incident of ‘mob’ justice makes me sick to stomach! I’m hoping that they find every culprit involved in this murder and let them face the justice. While I am against violence against animals, I am equally opposed to violence against human beings.

    • @ Roy – When it comes to being ashamed of ancestors, you and this group share a common trait!! Both are ashamed of their ancestors and heritage for different reasons!! – Sir Rampa’ji

      Sir’ji Modi’ji had said sometime back this year in Shanghai: – “Earlier, you felt ashamed of being born Indian”

      Even while addressing Indians in Seoul, Sriman Sir’ji had said – “There was a time when people used to say we don’t know what sins we committed in our past life that we were born in Hindustan.”

      (Err.. we will have to forgive him for NOT being consistent – but then consistency has NEVER been his second name). Nonetheless, let us proceed).

      So, Rampa, does this (our Pravaadi Sevaka’s message) adequately & succinctly ‘explain’ why you RAN away? Did you HATE your “ancestors & heritage” THAT much?

      BUT then, the Messiah is here & here to STAY! The second coming! Why not come back? You NEED not be ASHAMED anymore. Maybe you could also learn to appreciate how OUR common Vedic ancestors RELISHED Beef. But then, true RSS chaddis like Deena Nath Bhatra try and rewrite history? And poor fellas like you, read Goaaalmaaaalkara and get hyped up. Good going! 🙂

  5. Dear readers,

    Mohammed Ikhlaq,the father of an Indian Air Force(IAF)personnel,dragged out of his house,beaten up and murdered in cold blood.

    Just day ago,a man in Kanpur was lynched on the false suspicion that he was a ‘Pakistani terrorist’.Another man was killed in Delhi by Policeman,recently.Yet another, by a mob in Delhi,before that.But still,no one seems to notice how the hatred against Muslims has been going up.Systematically, the

    1. Day in and day out, Sadhvis and ‘Saints’ issue ultimatums and threaten to send any Aslam, Abid and Athar to Pakistan.
    2. Hate speech has become the norm and there are hardly any FIRs and absolutely no convictions.

    A BJP MLA says Muslims should sacrifice their own sons rather than goats on Baqrid.

    MP Sakshi Maharaj wants Muslims’ voting right to be taken away, Sadhvi Prachi and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti talk of Muslims ‘giving birth to puppies’ and ‘ramzada Vs haraam-zada’

    There are many more from Giriraj Kishore to Sadhvi Deva Thakur, Yogi Adityanath to Shiv Sena’s leaders who keep targeting Muslims. In the last 1-1/2 years, this tendency to abuse Muslims openly, has gone up.

    Not just in Gujarat, but in Samajwadi Party ruled UP and Congress-ruled Karnataka things are the same.

    3. More than 139 communal incidents have been reported from a single district, Mangalore, in Karnataka, lately. But no action has been taken to rein in the Saffron vigilantes.

    4. Institutions are being taken over, laws are being misused, government remains mute spectator and administration acts only after an incident.

    5. In one UP village, you won’t allow people to even sacrifice goats. In another place in Karnataka, a Hindu girl and Muslim talking, would lead to Muslim man being stripped and beaten up publicly.

    6. Then, rationalists are being killed all over India. Govind Pansare, Narendra Dabholkar, MM Kalburgi, have been shot dead. Many other secularists have been getting death threats.

    7. Action is being taken in BJP ruled states to hurt Muslims engaged in meat business.

    8. Laws have been amended and made stricter to such an extent that if a person gets caught on suspicion of carrying ‘beef’, it is up to him to prove his innocence.

    9. The law-enforcing authorities are unable to control rioters and extremist groups within the country but, ironically, our government is more interesting in the internal situation in Nepal, and wants it to remain a Hindu Rashtra.

    10. The situation within the country is such that law-and-order is collapsing. Vigilante groups and extremist organisations are calling the shots, but Prime Minister globe trotting and addressing only one Radio and Home Minister remain silent.

    Communal violence shows 24% jump in first five months of 2015, shows govt data

    Communal violence in India has registered a jump with incidents rising by 24% and related deaths too up by 65% in the first five months of 2015 as compared to the corresponding period of last year, when the UPA government was in the saddle.

    As per latest data collated by the Union home ministry, 287 communal incidents were reported from across the country this year until May 31, as compared to 232 over the same period in 2014. Deaths due to communal clashes during January-May 2015 rose to 43 from 26 and the number of injured too were higher at 961 from 701 in the first five months of last year.

    More than 139 communal incidents have been reported from a single district, Mangalore, in Karnataka, lately. But no action has been taken to rein in the Saffron vigilantes.

    Unfortunately no political party in India new how to counter the communal politics of RSS political wing BJP.It became common trend in those places going for elections.A non-BJP ruled state are highest risk of becoming vulnerable to communal politics.In fact, either it is the communal situation in Mangalore in Karnataka or the ban on Sanatan Sanstha, it (Congress) has always been exposed.While BJP is continued to capitalise and scoring on communal issues.
    Is this a ‘Gujarat Model’ or ‘Godhra Model’ being experimented in larger scale by ‘Ab ki bar Modi sarkar’?

    Is Modi ever going to express his displeasure or condemnation against communal forces in his ‘Mann Ki baat’ or ‘maximum utterance,minimum governance will continue?Does the Congress have the guts, courage to fight RSS, BJP? The answer is a clear, no.

    Ab ki baar Modi sarkar,minorities hoga khule aam qatal.Gujarat ka Sher aaya, insano ka narbhakshak hua.

  6. Dear readers,

    What’s the Connection of Maneka Gandhi’s NGO to the Dadri Killing? – Amaresh Misra

    But the Dadri killing was not a `spontaneous reaction’. It was planned meticulously; on 16th September a calf was reported missing in the area; then VHP-BJP-RSS propagandists spread rumors about Muslims stealing the calf; then `some outsiders from Delhi belonging to a animal rights NGO appeared’ and further exacerbated the tension; then the priest of the local temple was pressurized by two persons belonging to this NGO to announce that a particular Muslim family had `stored and eaten beef’; and then a lynch mob was collected that killed Akhlaq on 28th September…

    Five people have been arrested so far; of these, two, Saurabh and Gaurav Gupta, are goons owing allegiance to People For Animals (PFA), an animal welfare/rights organization run by BJP minister Maneka Gandhi…

    But the Delhi media is still playing games, referring to Saurabh and Gaurav Gupta as `Saurabh Singh’ etc…
    But the truth is out…

    Is she runs NGO for animals or breed vampires to suck blood out of innocent humans?

    Jai Hind
