Mangaluru: ABKBKS to Hold 40th Annual Jodukere Kambala on January 3

Mangaluru: The Aikala Bhava Kanthabhaare – Bhoodhabaare Kambala Samiti, Aikala held a press meet at the Mangalore Press Club, Urwa here, on January 1.

Speaking to the mediapersons, the President of Aikala Bhava, Dr Deviprasad Shetty said, “Aikalotsava was organised on December 27. Various folk games were organised keeping in mind the maximum participation by all young and old.”



Deviprasad further said that, Mulki regional Bantara Sangha, Lions Club, Rotary Club Kinnigoli, school children and many villagers had taken part in the event.

“The 40th annual Jodukere Kambala will be held on January 3. The event will be inaugurated by famed vasthu expert and astrologer, Chandrashekar Swamiji at 11:00am. MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik and President of District Kambala Samiti, Shantharam Shetty Barkur will preside over the function. A programme will be held at 5:30pm, which will be inaugurated by DH Shankaramurthy, President of Kambala Samiti, Dr MN Rajendra Kumar will preside over the function,” Deviprasad said.

“Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology, B Ramanath Rai will be the Chief Guest. Minister for Sports and Fisheries, Abhaychandra Jain, Udupi District in-charge Vinaykumar Sorake, Health Minister, UT Khader, MP Naleen Kumar Kateel and others will also be present,” he added.

Kambala has a history of over 900 years. References to Aikala Kambala are found in the court chronicles of Mulki Jain king in the year 1770.

“Though the courageous sport of Kambala was once banned, the court has stayed the ban order and has allowed us to organise the sport but with new rules. These rules ensure that the animals are not harmed in anyway. We expect up to 50000 people to show up for this culturally and historically rich sport,” Deviprasad said.

President of Kambala Samiti(KS), Kishan Bhandary, Secretary of KS Yogesh Rao, Chitaranjan Bhandary and Prakash Shetty were also present.
